Wearable art… and I want to be the one wearing it! Rachel Wightman, previously an interiors stylist in the magazine world, now describes herself as “a maker of things”, and has a design line called Not Tuesday. These gorgeous polymer clay beads are all totally unique because each one is handmade, and colour mixed, by Rachel. Yes, without a doubt, they are officially on my Christmas list… it’s not too early to start that, right? Right!

Korean artist Kyeok Kim has created these lovely pieces as part of her Jewellery as Second Skin series. The idea is that as you wash your hands, the ring slowly disappears leaving your hands smelling like a drop of perfume. It is meant to be “… a sensory experience [that becomes] an unconscious ornament.” Now, don’t get me wrong, I would love an unconscious ornament… but these rings are so gorgeous, I might just opt for never washing my hands while wearing them. Not the point, I know, but I just don’t think I could watch them dissolve!

I’m sure you all remember that I went to Alt Summit this past January {you should… I couldn’t stop talking about it!} Anyway, on that life-changing trip I met some amazing people, two of whom happen to be the founders of cargoh, a curated online marketplace for indie designers/artists. Well, as of today, cargoh is new & improved, with even more fab features to help you buy and sell beautiful things. Here are a few of my favorite items… and yes, I realize that I have a bit of a feather theme happening. Beautiful, geometric sculptures that I want to hang on my wall… or on my shirt. These little pieces of art are brooches made from bits of colorful polymer clay by an Athens based artist/Agricultural Biotechnology student named Eva. Yes. I said Agricultural Biotechnology student.  Apparently, when she doesn’t feel like studying, she’s busy filling her Etsy shop, nomilk today, with all sorts of wearable art to make me jealous … make sure you check out the earrings, necklaces, and rings too! Love.

I can’t even bring myself to call this jewelry. Nope,  it’s art, and that’s all there is to it! However, there’s no need for a gallery display case because Debra Baxter has designed this insanely beautiful wearable art, to slip directly onto your fingers. Want some more proof that these aren’t just rings? Ok, would a piece of plain old jewelry have a title like this… “Crystal Brass Knuckles (I am going to realign  your chakras mother******!)” See? It’s definitely art.

How cool would I be if I could actually pull off wearing that gorgeous spiky necklace… or that fantastically huge ring? Mmmm, chips… no, no – not a huge, sculptural installation that looks like a pile of chips {although that would be pretty cool}… I just want plain old potato chips. Preferably with dip.

Brooches, rings and pendants that capture quiet, domestic moments delicately illustrated using human hair. Wait… what?! Yep, jewelry designer/artist Melanie Bilenker has actually used her own hair to create this these lovely pieces. Thankfully she has a section on her website to explain exactly how she does this {because I could not figure it out on my own}:

“The Victorians kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love. In much the same way, I secure my memories through photographic images rendered in lines of my own hair, the physical remnants.”

So, you know how every wedding anniversary has a designated type of gift… first anniversary is paper, fifth anniversary is wood, etc, etc. Well, this weekend I’m celebrating my seventh, so naturally I checked the chart… Wool and or copper. Hmm. Well, I’m deathly allergic to wool, and I definitely don’t want a pot, so I made an executive decision. Seven years has officially become custom-designed, upcycled license plate belt buckles. Ah, yes. Much better! I found these little gems on Etsy {of course!}, and with one quick email to Amanda Holt of Vintage in Retrospect we were off to the races. She basically let us design exactly what we wanted… dark blue, a big 7, a star, and not one little bit of wool or copper in sight. Yep, we love each other, and our incredibly cool lucky 7 belt buckles, very much! Thanks Amanda!
