Congratulations, both of you are now the proud owners of the first four issues of Fine Line Magazine! You are going to love them! {I’ll be in touch to arrange getting them to you} Thank you Fine Line, for giving away such a lovely gift, and thanks a bunch to everyone who entered… now that I know how much you guys love give-aways, I’ll have to do them more often! xo

Happy Hallowe’en! Yep, it’s the perfect day for giving treats, and boy oh boy, have I got a good one for you! The stunningly beautiful art magazine, Fine Line, is going to package up their first four issues into a neat little box set for two, that’s right, two lucky readers! All you have to do is “like” their Facebook page, and leave a comment here {so I can draw your name/know how to give you the good news!} I’ll do the draw on Thursday November 3rd, at noon Pacific time, and announce the two winners here {leave me your email too if you’d like!} Yep, that’s it… easier than dressing up and going door to door looking for treats, don’t ya think?

Oh, and here are a few of my favorite artists, that have been featured in these first four issues {ie. a little preview of the treat!}:

{Jesse Draxler // Javier Pinon // Hollie Chastain // Amira Fritz // Jonathan Zawada}

Jessica Steeber and Cassandra Smith are artists and curators – oh, and they’re also the co-creators of Fine Line, a brand new quarterly print magazine, based in Milwaukee, that just came out last week.  It’s ad and article free… in other words, it’s a whole bunch of big, beautiful, glossy, uninterrupted, art-filled pages. Um, yes, I’m jealous. If The Jealous Curator was a magazine, it would be this magazine. I love so many of the artists featured in the first issue, and have actually written about a handful of them. Sigh. Nice work ladies – it’s gorgeous.

{Artists featured above… cover ~ Christopher Gorski; Jeremy Daigneault; Sidney Pink; Blaise Pascal; Benedetta Falugi; Hollie Chastain; Van Morrison quote}

psst… you can buy issue 1 online right at this very moment. enjoy!

Is it weird that I’m totally jealous of the dolls who get to live in this house? No, I didn’t think so either. These super cool, damn I wish I’d thought of it, dollhouse interiors are by Georgia Smith, and were featured in the latest issue of frankie magazine. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about Georgia {i don’t even have a link for you}, so let me know if you have any info… oh, and if you could get me some of that amazing teeny-tiny wallpaper while you’re at it, that would be fantastic!

{via cream coloured ponies}

ps. continuing with the dollhouse theme… if you missed the post about Heather Benning a few weeks ago, you must go and take a look!

i’m jealous of these… well, magazine bits!

10.01.2010

So, on the last day of my ode to magazines week, I’ve decided not to feature a magazine. I know… crazy! Instead I’m going to make day 5 all about the art that exists because of magazines. A little snip-snip of the scissors, a bit of glue, maybe a splash of paint, and voilà… these old LIFE magazines, sexy/glossy fashion magazines, and good old National Geographics are transformed into something entirely new. From one kind of art form, into another. Sigh. So, so inspiring. In fact, maybe I’ll go and grab my scissors right now! Oh, but I promise I won’t cut up any of the publications I featured this week… well, not yet anyway.

{1. One of the forefathers of pop culture collage, Richard Hamilton 2. Ciara Phelan 3. Chad Kouri 4. Natalie Perkins 5. Stina Persson 6. Joe Ryckebosch 7. Jesse Draxler 8. Abigail Reynolds… ok well, this final piece actually uses book pages, not magazine pages… but, hey, it’s my blog, so I’m putting it in anyway!}

i’m jealous of working class magazine

09.30.2010

I’m not sure how many Brooklynites I’ve written about {I’m gonna guess 53}, but if you want the real skinny on the art community there, then I suggest you pick up a copy of Working Class Magazine. Why? Well, I’ll let them tell you in their own words:

“Working Class represents a community of local artists in New York… writers, photographers, poets, illustrators, models, small business owners, actors, musicians. We all work and live in this big city, and know the struggles of things like bad tippers, overpriced rents, and disagreeable weather. Working Class taps the pulse of the underground art world, and discusses why we all stick around.”

Sigh. So cool. Ok, it’s official, I’m jealous... and thinking about moving to New York, despite the overpriced rent.

{Working Class is a quarterly zine available in print or online, so pick up a copy, or grab your laptop, and get yourself down to a hip little coffee shop… oh, and don’t forget to tip!}

i’m jealous of anthology magazine

Ode to magazines week: day three…

Oooh, this is a good one! So, I know that more and more magazines are taking their articles and layouts online, which is great, but there is also something really nice about holding a printed piece in your hands… especially when it looks like this! Anthology is a gorgeous new quarterly lifestyle magazine that hits the shelves this fall. And if their beautifully illustrated cover, gorgeous layouts of inspirational interiors, and conversations with some very interesting people {ie blogger extraordinaire, Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge} is not enough to make you jealous, they’ve also created a lovely two minute stop-motion video, titled Print Is Not Dead, to go along with the launch, and here’s why:

“I wanted there to be a dual message: one announcing our magazine and another showing how print and paper are important in our lives. I drafted the concept of a woman going through her day and how paper (specifically a magazine) is a big, but subtle part of her daily experience. Even though I knew it was going to be a ton of work, I also wanted much of the set and the props to be made from paper.” ~ Meg Mateo Ilasco, Creative Director

{… oh, and thanks to Erin Loechner of Design for Mankind, I can send you off to read her exclusive  interview with Anthology’s Creative Director Meg Mateo Ilasco… enjoy!}

*psst… if the video isn’t showing up, click here to see it.

i’m jealous of rue magazine

09.28.2010

Day two of magazine week…

I’ve been following the launch of rue magazine on twitter all summer, and as of last week, it’s finally on the stands… well, the virtual stands. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I felt about a magazine that existed entirely online {I do love ink on paper}, but last Thursday I sipped my coffee and “flipped” through the first issue of rue, and it was good. Very good! I suppose it only makes sense that it’s an online publication, seeing how the co-founders {Crystal Gentilello, and Anne Sage} met each other through blogging. Their love for interior design and writing connected them, and logically led here… lovely  layouts, great design advice, and interviews with interesting people from the coolest cities in the world. Good luck team rue! I can’t wait to “flip” through the next issue!

{…the pages shown above are from an article featuring the San Francisco home of the super stylish Victoria Smith. I’ve been writing guest posts on her blog, sfgirlbybay, about an imaginary home that I’m decorating with beautiful things… hmm, turns out that it’s not so imaginary! I think Victoria might actually live in “the house that jealousy built“!}

i’m jealous of frankie magazine

09.27.2010

It’s my ode to magazines week… and I’m starting with a doozie!

I got my first copy of frankie about two years ago, sort of by accident. A friend of mine had been given a copy by an Australian friend of hers… long story short, everyone agreed that it was totally my kind o’ thing, so I ended up with it… and fell madly in love! What is there not to love about this artsy lifestyle magazine from down under? Beautiful photography, gorgeous layouts, hilarious/smart writing, and fabulous full page features on some of my favourite artists {Aris Moore and Holly Farrell for example!}.  Anyway, I managed to find a little shop in my city that carries it… that way I don’t have to wait around for Australian friends of friends to leave a copy behind on a coffee table. Much more efficient.

{Jealous Curator tidbit: about 5 months after I started The Jealous Curator, frankie did a little write up about it in their “frank bits” section. I was thrilled beyond thrilled… still am actually!}

i’m jealous of WAFA… again

09.20.2010

WAFA, aka We Are Fucking Awesome, aren’t joking. They really are. I’ve written about the founder, I’ve written about them as a collective, and I’ve written about several individual members {Jesse, Anthony, Brandi}. Hmm, some might say I’m becoming a bit of a WAFA groupie {I wonder if they have tshirts?!}… anywho, onto today’s fucking awesome collaboration. This project, titled Anthology, is a National Geographic magazine split up by two members of WAFA… one worked on the first half, the other worked on the second half. I want to be this awesome. Dad, do you still have that box of National Geographics in the basement? I may need them.

{I’m not sure which two artists actually worked on this piece. If you know, let me know… I need it for my fan scrapbook research purposes. Thank you.}
