i’m jealous of jessica eaton

08.28.2012

Ok, apparently these striking images are photographs. I have no idea how Montreal based photographer Jessica Eaton created this work. Mind you, that’s part of the reason I love them so much… they are an artsy mystery to me! If you’re not happy with a mystery, and want a little more info, here is a quote from her bio on the Clint Roenisch Gallery site that might help explain… maybe:

Using a wide array of experimental, analogue-based photographic techniques such as colour separation filters, multiple exposures, dark slides and in-camera masking Jessica Eaton builds images on sheets of 4×5 film that address fundamental properties of photography such as light, chance, duration, illusion and spatial relations.

{Thanks to my friend Patrick for pointing me to Jessica’s amazing work.}

i’m jealous of claire oswalt

08.27.2012

Oh my goodness. Brooklyn based artist Claire Oswalt and her wooden paper dolls {ok, I realize that’s not a ‘thing’, but I couldn’t figure out how to describe these amazing pieces?!} are my newest obsession. Graphite and paper on wood, that I assume can pivot thanks to those little pins… although, let’s be honest, I would never have the guts to move these girls into different positions – yep, I’m a rule follower, plus, their perfect symmetry is part of why I love them oh so much.

i’m jealous of pascuala lira

08.24.2012

These arrived in my inbox the other day. Yep, I love this “job”! Chilean artist, Pascuala Lira made my heart skip a beat with her lovely compositions, gorgeous color choices, and yes, I kinda love that lady behind the couch! Blue-soled shoes? Amazing. These pieces are from her painting portfolio, and I thought I had my post… and then I discovered her “lumber” portfolio:

Gor.Ge.Ous. On that note, have a happy weekend! I’m going to spend mine looking for scrap wood.

i’m jealous of… geishas in swimsuits?

08.23.2012

Ok. I found these, loved them immediately, and then started searching high n’ low for the mixed media genius that created them. Turns out that they’re not collages… they’re photographs from the early 1900’s! I still don’t completely believe it, but apparently, it’s true. Yep, during the Meiji and Taisho Eras of Old Japan, photographing Geishas in swimwear was all the rage. Stripes, hits of candy-hues, fancy up-do’s… hang on a second… that’s all the rage NOW!

{The photographer(s) of these images are unknown… to me anyway. If you know anything about them, please leave a comment. Via FLAVORWIRE}

i’m jealous of sarah gee… again

08.22.2012

I wrote about Vancouver-based artist Sarah Gee, and her paper-cut circles, last year… but when I saw her newly invented “drawing machine”, I just had to write again! She’s taking perfect circles to a whole new level using a drawing machine that she built herself, out of various household appliances… um, can you say genius?! Here, watch this… and I dare you not to fall into a meditative trance:

Ahhh, I’m so relaxed/totally in awe of Sarah’s hand control! Wow. Here are some of the results from this amazing machine {and it’s amazing master!}

Seriously. I sooo want to try this! However, for now I think I’ll just buy one. The original drawings {ink and/or graphite}, which are really, really big {22″x30″ on Stonehenge paper} are only $150. What?! Yep, it’s true. Visit Sarah’s site to pick one {ps. there’s more being photographed as we speak}, and then just email her to arrange which gorgeous, colorful, mesmerizing circle you want for your wall… but I call dibs on this one ♥

i’m jealous of russ noto

08.21.2012

A polka-dot horse, color-coded hounds, and a big pink bull… yep, this is my kind o’ farm. These large scale oil paintings are the work of American artist, and newly graduated MFA student, Russ Noto … sigh… he had me at PINK.

i’m jealous of holly farrell’s shoes

08.20.2012

Sigh. Love. I have written about Canadian painter Holly Farrell so many times. She paints everyday objects like chairs, bowls, bars of soap, and yes… shoes! Holly’s work is going to be featured in my book {YAY!}, and when I was going through her portfolio looking for my favorite pieces the other day, I found myself gathering up a whole bunch of her shoes… and voila, today’s post was born! ♥

i’m jealous of rineke dijkstra

08.17.2012

Oh, the amazing, large-scale beach portraits of Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra. They almost look like hyper-real paintings, don’t they? These photographs, from her series titled Beach Portraits, are not only huge {approx 46″ x 37″!!}, they are also absolutely stunning in their quiet simplicity. Sigh.

{Looking for something to do this weekend? Perfect! There is a retrospective of her work currently showing at the Guggenheim from June 29 ~ October 8, 2012}

i’m still jealous of stacey page

08.16.2012

I wrote about American artist Stacey Page almost two years ago… well, clearly she’s been busy, and so clearly I have to write about her again! Portraits & embroidery? Yep, it gets me every single time. Gah!

i’m jealous of daphne chan

08.15.2012

Lovely, yet somewhat disturbing, nudes by Vancouver based photographer Daphne Chan. They are so peaceful, soft, weird, and uncomfortable … sigh… I love them.

{There is a really good video interview with Daphne on “HOT ART WET CITY”… great insight into her work/subject matter.}
