i’m jealous of juliana santacruz herrera

04.25.2011

Oh mon dieu! Everything is more fabulous in Paris, even the pot holes! Artist Juliana Santacruz Herrera has taken it upon herself to make a few repairs… one colorfully dyed, braided, coiled piece of cloth at a time. Yep, yet another reason to go to Paris. Sigh.

i’m jealous of debra broz

04.22.2011

Bunnies with misplaced ears, two-headed lambs, and a, um… bunateal?  Seriously, would you expect anything less from me heading into Easter weekend?  All of these strange little ceramic misfits are from Oddities, a series by Austin based artist Debra Broz. Oh boy, I sure hope I get a basket full of these on Sunday morning… ok, and maybe just a little bit of chocolate. Happy weekend everyone! xo

i’m jealous of catherine ulitsky

04.21.2011

I loved these pieces, by American artist Catherine Ulitsky, when I thought they were just geometric gouache paintings on photographic skies… and then I looked a little closer and realized that the tiny black dots connecting all of the candy-hued lines were huge flocks of starlings in flight. Now I really love them.

i’m jealous of ivan puig

04.20.2011

I have to admit that when I first saw this installation piece, titled “hasta las narices” {which translates to “fed up”} by Mexican artist Ivan Puig, I wasn’t sure what was going on… but whatever it was, I liked it! Ok, that car slowly sinking into the milky-white floor is insanely amazing, no?! Anyway, after a little searching around, and with a little help from Google Translate, it all became clear… ish:

“The project consists of three parts installed, its origin is related to the proportions of events and their relativity. It uses the format of the comic. The viewer passes between the parts to zoom way out, this discursive system gives special emphasis to the last piece, which is synthesized and dimension making the whole work.

i’m jealous of hilary pecis

04.19.2011

I would love to wander around inside of these intricate collages by San Francisco based artist Hilary Pecis. Hm, ok, maybe not the one with all of the fighter planes, explosions, and mountain goats… but, I could definitely be convinced to spend a dreamy afternoon cuddling with fluffy kittens while eating huge amounts of vanilla ice cream.

i’m jealous of nazmul howlader

04.18.2011

Whoa. I love this… sketchbook? Ok, I guess I can’t call it a sketchbook, seeing how there are no sketches in it. Nope, instead of using pencil, New York based artist Nazmul Howlader has filled all of these pages with amazing cut paper creations. So, so beautiful, and insanely inspiring! Hmm, now there must be a pair of scissors around here somewhere…

a very jealous week…

04.15.2011

Oh boy – that was fun! I have been here, there, and everywhere in the last few days, and I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to all of my amazing hosts. I really am so honored to be part of these fantastic blogs, and I can honestly say, that at this very moment, I’m actually a little bit jealous of myself! Thanks again everyone… see you next week.

i’m jealous of chris von szombathy

04.15.2011

Mmm… nothing like some polymer clay, acrylic paint, and cardstock to make a girl wanna do a late night run through the drive-thru! Although the majority of Vancouver-based artist Chris von Szombathy’s work seems to be digital illustration, I just love {love!!!} his food sculptures… yes, even the healthy options, like some ‘flav R full’ milk or a few perfectly fine/slightly over-ripe bananas. Yum.

{ …and hot off the presses, yesterday the The Cheaper Show announced the 200 artists that will be in this year’s show, and Chris is on the list! June 25th in Vancouver. Hm, I may have to do a burger run immediately after the opening.}

i’m jealous of junktion

04.14.2011

Ok, this should probably go under ‘design’, but really, an enamel pot with a bunch of illuminated teapots growing out of it, like some kind of bizarre Alice in Wonderland garden, should also totally qualify as art! Either way, I love just about everything that Tel Aviv based Junktion makes… or, more correctly, remakes. They take forgotten junk and flip it on it’s head {literally, did you see those dangling phone lamps?}. TV’s transformed into lights, suitcases into tables, and don’t even get me started on those bike seats turned bar stools. DIWITOT {ie., Damn, I wish I thought of that!}

i’m jealous of thomas campbell

04.13.2011

Oh. My. Word. I’m not sure if it’s the unbelievable textile work of California based artist,  painter, film maker, sculptor, designer {oh and of course, surfer} Thomas Campbell, or if it’s his amazingly creative mess of a home-based studio that’s causing these jealousy induced chest pains. Hm, perhaps it’s the combo… either way, I think I need to sit down for a moment.
