You know the expression “being at the right place, at the right time”… yep, well, that totally applies to the work of Swiss-born, Paris based artist Felice Varini. At first glance I assumed these were just geometric designs digitally layered over a photograph…Â I was wrong. They are in fact geometric designs painted directly onto actual buildings, but, the trick is, you must be standing at an exact point to see them, otherwise they appear as random broken lines (as seen above). Yeah, I know… Ah- mazing!

Oh, how I wish I could step into the pages of this wordless book, by Rotterdam based artist Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva… although, the gas masks are a little disconcerting. Oh well, I could deal with that. I think it would be worth it to wander through magnified gardens, ride giant bumper cars in a city square, and spend sunny afternoons poolside with sea lions. Hmm, and maybe after a dip in that pool I’ll grab my crayons and get started on those fantastic coloring book pages. See… who needs words? This story really just writes itself!
{Thank you to my nameless friend at Junkculture for knowing that I’d love Masha’s work… xo}

I have drawn on a lot of things, so why, oh why, has it never occurred to me to draw on stones? Damn. Well, clearly Yoran Morvant realized that rock is the new paper. Sigh… intricately hand-drawn lines, patiently layered into stunning patterns on smooth, grey stones. I said ‘damn’ already, right?

Ok, that’s it, you’re all invited over for fancy cake on fancy plates… but I call dibs on that gun! Hm, on second thought, let’s just use our hands, and I’ll hang these gorgeous ceramic pieces, by Vancouver based artist Laura McKibbon, on the wall where they belong. Yes – that’s a much better, although somewhat messier, plan.

Los Angeles based artist Kevin Appel makes me want to dust off that stack of old National Geographics in the corner of my studio, and get to work! Found images, collage, and a whole bunch of oh so beautiful white space… yep, I’m jealous.
{…thanks so much to Elizabeth, from the littlest blog, for sending me a link to Kevin’s work.}

So, you know how I love mixed media collage, right? Right. Well, imagine how happy I was when I found the work of San Francisco based artist Kelly Allen… wait, what? Those are paintings?! Yes, yes they are. Ok, I know it’s not very artistically academic of me to say ‘holy crap!’, but come on, that’s what we’re all thinking.

Do you love typography? How about famed Italian film maker Federico Fellini? Well then, today is your lucky day! Canadian artist Jenny Shipper has created an artsy, typographic ode to Fellini, “each letter form containing elements present in Fellini’s films, whether it be set decoration, characters, line quality or Fellini himself. From A to Z each letter evolves into it’s own entity, individual as it is unique.” Love.

If pop culture got up on Sunday morning and decided to go to church, I’m pretty sure it would look something like this! Yep, French artist Soasig Chamaillard has filled the pews with a few very recognizable pop icons including My Little Mary, Super Mary and of course, my favorite, Hello Mary.
ps. I thought I should add this statement from the artist, just as an FYI… “I don’t use Holy Marie as my subject to shock a catholic public. I like to play with icons, like a [child] with his toys, to try to understand the world which surrounds me.”

I love these intricate, delicate drawings by American artist Caitlin Foster, because a) they’re absolutely beautiful to look at, and b) you have to admire anyone with this kind of patience! In Caitlin’s words, her work focuses on “fine attention to small details, gestures, and patterns in everyday life”. Yep, I’m pretty sure that I would not have the attention span to finish one of … oh look, a bird!

Umm, I just have to get this out – that pink balloon is killing me… killing me! Ok, let’s move on. So, you’re not going to believe what these amazing sculptures, by Australian artist Amy Joy Watson, are made from. Ready? Balsa wood. Watercolor stained, carefully cut bits of balsa wood, delicately hand-stitched {hand-stitched!!} together to create these geometric shapes that are, you guessed it, killing me!!!
{…thanks to Paula for sending me a link to Amy’s beautiful work. Oh, and while we’re talking about amazing art made from wood, pop over to sfgirlbybay to see my latest curated collection. Today’s theme… yep, wood.}
