Ah, poetry & art… a perfect combination! This is a beautiful book of poetry, written by American poet Hannah Stephenson<\/a>. She is an amazing writer\/editor\/teacher, with a great love for visual art. In fact, a lot of her poems are inspired by art… sometimes even work that she finds here! For example, after seeing the ceramics of Caroline Slotte<\/a>,\u00a0Hannah wrote this:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Great Migration<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Patterns on china have begun<\/em><\/p>\n

to show evidence of a great migration.<\/em><\/p>\n

Waves roll out to a plate\u2019s edges,<\/em><\/p>\n

drop off, are absorbed into carpet.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the stock-still water, feeling no wind,<\/em><\/p>\n

cranes panic and launch, beat their wings<\/em><\/p>\n

with such force that nearby villagers<\/em><\/p>\n

mistake them for dragons.<\/em><\/p>\n

Smaller birds leave their nests in the trees,<\/em><\/p>\n

head for the dark, unporcelain woods.<\/em><\/p>\n

Lovers no longer come here<\/em><\/p>\n

to sit on the grass together,<\/em><\/p>\n

discovering speechless ways to speak.<\/em><\/p>\n

They stay away from this place.<\/em><\/p>\n

The land here isn\u2019t fed by any source.<\/em><\/p>\n

Parents shield their children\u2019s eyes,<\/em><\/p>\n

pull them close when passing the pond.<\/em><\/p>\n

Someone should do something, they mutter<\/em><\/p>\n

and leave the land to its calm disintegration.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Whoa. <\/em>Her newly released book, In the Kettle, The Shriek<\/em>,<\/a> is filled with beautiful poem after beautiful poem… but I also wanted to share something that isn’t in this book. Now, you know I realllllly don’t like showing my own work, but… last year I had a show at Seattle’s Assemble Gallery<\/a>. Hannah saw one of the pieces, wrote a poem, and sent it to me. I almost cried. I could not be more honored… and I love the poem so, so, so much… I love it so much in fact, that I’ll even show you my work that went with it, titled “Jeremy Brown jumped over this at a bush party.” <\/em><\/p>\n

Living Daylights<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

To find that part of me
\nstill flickering,<\/em><\/p>\n

to chew and exhale flames,
\na dragon with a mouth
\ncrammed with Bazooka Joe,<\/em><\/p>\n

to use my heart
\nas a flashlight,<\/em><\/p>\n

to meet my ghost
\nas a dance partner,
\nspinning away from me,
\nand back toward me,<\/em><\/p>\n

to sift out the glowing shards
\nwith unshaking hands
\nand swallow them back down,<\/em><\/p>\n

to greet my fiery shadow,
\nsaying, here is our bed,
\nour mirror, we can learn
\none another again.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
