Ok, let me start by saying that Wayne is one of my favorite artists <em>ever<\/em>. I tried to be cool, but alas, I spent the first quarter\u00a0of this episode having a\u00a0fan-girl panic attack, and I&#8217;m pretty sure you&#8217;ll be able to tell. So, to make it more entertaining for yourself, please feel free to take a shot of tequila\u00a0every time I say, &#8220;WOW!&#8221; or &#8220;relaxed&#8221;&#8230;\u00a0<em>(sigh)&#8230; y<\/em>ep, embarrassing\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0but not the beautiful kind. You can listen to our conversation right up there, under that embarrassingly beautiful\u00a0painting, or you can\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/podcast\/jealous-curator-art-for-your\/id996338562\" target=\"_blank\">subscribe on iTunes<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, I\u00a0could have talked to Wayne\u00a0for five more hours, I had so many questions. I wish I&#8217;d asked about his amazingly talented\/creative wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mimi_Pond\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Pond<\/a>\u00a0<em>(pictured below hugging Wayne in a giant LBJ puppet head)<\/em>.\u00a0I didn&#8217;t even get to the part about his work on the Smashing Pumpkins <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NOG3eus4ZSo\" target=\"_blank\">Tonight, Tonight<\/a><\/em> video or Peter Gabriel&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RUP4dCucVnY\" target=\"_blank\">Big Time<\/a><\/em> video&#8230; and that&#8217;s just the tip of the iceberg. Oh well,\u00a0just go watch his film,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/buy.beautyisembarrassing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Beauty is Embarrassing<\/a>\u00a0(directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/beautyisembarrassing.com\/the-film\/directors-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Berkeley<\/a>)<\/em>\u00a0and you&#8217;ll get the gist. Oh, and try not to cry. This is one of my most favorite movies of all time, so that&#8217;s where I jumped in:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24258\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite21.jpg\" alt=\"waynewhite2\" width=\"584\" height=\"2578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite21.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite21-68x300.jpg 68w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite21-232x1024.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It really is such a great documentary. Yes, it covers his work and his life, but it also hits all sorts of nerves about getting burnt out, self-doubt<em> (hoozy thinky iz)<\/em>, and finding your way to a place where you&#8217;re just creating work that makes you happy. Yep, I cried at least three or four times as I thought, &#8220;Yes! Me too!&#8221; &#8230; and don&#8217;t even get me started on\u00a0Mrs. Stoddard, or when Wayne&#8217;s dad starts crying. Yeah, you&#8217;re going to need a tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, now for all of you kids from the 1980s, you&#8217;ll remember this\u00a0from Saturday morning TV &#8230;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qp7G18nQxvU\" target=\"_blank\">Pee-wee&#8217;s Playhouse!<\/a>\u00a0Wayne was part of the team from the beginning &#8211; designing sets, puppets, and he even did a bunch of the voices\u00a0<em>(Dirty Dog, Randy, one of the flowers, etc etc)<\/em>.\u00a0Hello, childhood flashback:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24243\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite3.jpg\" alt=\"waynewhite3\" width=\"584\" height=\"3434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite3.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite3-51x300.jpg 51w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite3-174x1024.jpg 174w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, Pee-wee. Good times. <em>&#8220;Beauty is Embarrassing&#8221;<\/em> covers all of this so well\u00a0<em>(including the pre-cursor to Pee-wee&#8217;s Playhouse, a Nashville Kids&#8217; Show called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fgpQjSPyIBI\" target=\"_blank\">Mrs.Cabobbles Caboose<\/a>)&#8230;\u00a0<\/em>so again&#8230; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/buy.beautyisembarrassing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">go watch this movie!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And of course, Wayne&#8217;s thrift shop landscape\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/waynewhiteart.com\/index.php?\/project\/word-paintings\/\" target=\"_blank\">word paintings<\/a> that I love more than I can say. He does all sorts of amazing things <em>(sculptures, puppets, drawings etc)<\/em> but these paintings have definitely\u00a0become something he&#8217;s known for:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite41.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24262\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite41.jpg\" alt=\"waynewhite4\" width=\"584\" height=\"2494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite41.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite41-70x300.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite41-240x1024.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So hilarious! I have a thing for\u00a0funny art,\u00a0probably\u00a0because it&#8217;s\u00a0pretty\u00a0hard\u00a0to find. I just love that he&#8217;s taken these forgotten landscapes and turned them into beautifully painted text pieces&#8230; text pieces that allow him to\u00a0say whatever the hell he wants to say! You know, things like &#8220;all that fake laughin for nothin&#8221;, &#8220;just a picture \/ shunned by scholars \/ now it costs ten thousand dollars&#8221;, and one of my favorites&#8230; &#8220;just leave the awards on the kitchen table \/\u00a0i&#8217;m back here paintin a fuckin masterpiece&#8221; &#8230; Ha! That makes me\u00a0LOL, as the kids say.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, this is the book we mentioned a couple of times. Designer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/13\/fashion\/todd-oldhams-life-after-fashion.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Todd Oldham<\/a>\u00a0loves\u00a0Wayne&#8217;s work too, and one of the results of that is this beautiful book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wayne-White-Respect-Richly-Deserve\/dp\/1934429678\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Maybe Now I&#8217;ll Get The Respect I So Richly Deserve&#8221;<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wayne-White-Respect-Richly-Deserve\/dp\/1934429678\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24245\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite5.jpg\" alt=\"waynewhite5\" width=\"584\" height=\"856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite5.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/waynewhite5-205x300.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s that.
