Unless you\u2019ve been living under a rock, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve seen the recently revealed official portrait of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/michelleobama\/\">Michelle Obama<\/a>. I honestly can&#8217;t believe she made time to talk to me, but yes, Baltimore based painter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amysherald.com\/\">Amy Sherald<\/a>\u00a0is my guest today. We definitely talked about the piece of American history she just finished painting <em>{no pressure}<\/em>, but I also wanted to know everything that led up to this exciting moment in her life. Amy and I are talking about her original plan to become a doctor, the years she worked as a bouncer at a bar, and how she found the path to her own very unique style. Let&#8217;s start off with the unicorn equestrian that I obviously<em> had<\/em> to\u00a0bring up:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/09\/use-it-or-lose-it\/amysherald2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31013\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31013\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"3003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald2.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald2-199x1024.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The queen is fantastic! And, I <em>think<\/em> that last one is a costume. I hope.<\/p>\n<p>Next, just people being people&#8230; in a stunning, engaging, brightly colored, Amy Sherald kind of way:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/09\/use-it-or-lose-it\/amysherald3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31014\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31014\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"2995\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seriously, she is so good. That final piece above is the ten-year-old we mentioned, Amy&#8217;s youngest subject so far.<\/p>\n<p>Oooh, and this is <em>&#8220;Miss.Everything&#8221;<\/em>&#8230; and she really is:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/09\/use-it-or-lose-it\/amysherald4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31015\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31015\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"2157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald4.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald4-81x300.jpg 81w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald4-277x1024.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the painting that made Amy the first woman to be awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/portraitcompetition.si.edu\/\">Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition<\/a> grand prize. That close-up! Her skin is gorgeous. It&#8217;s so soft-looking, I can hardly believe it&#8217;s paint.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of soft skin <em>{according to Amy&#8217;s sister}<\/em>, here is the official portrait of FLOTUS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/michelleobama\/\">Michelle Obama<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/09\/use-it-or-lose-it\/amysherald5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31016\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31016\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"1771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald5.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald5-99x300.jpg 99w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald5-338x1024.jpg 338w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Sigh.<\/em>\u00a0Ok, I already loved this painting so much, but hearing the behind-the-scenes story directly from Amy made me love it even more. The reference to quilts <em>{<a href=\"http:\/\/www.quiltsofgeesbend.com\/\">Gee&#8217;s Bend<\/a>}<\/em>, Michelle&#8217;s elegant pose, and again, that lovely grey-scale skin&#8230; beautiful. All of that work &#8211; the selection process, choosing wardrobe, taking photographs, going back for more photographs, and then, oh yes, painting a portrait to be hung in the <a href=\"http:\/\/npg.si.edu\/\">National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian<\/a> as part of American history &#8211; definitely worth some celebrating:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/09\/use-it-or-lose-it\/amysherald6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31017\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31017\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"1096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald6.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald6-160x300.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/amysherald6-546x1024.jpg 546w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, clearly, I&#8217;m not the only one who&#8217;s in awe of Amy&#8217;s work. A two-year-old named Parker is mesmerized as well. She thinks this is a painting of a queen.
