Bahamian born, Toronto based artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gioswaby.com\/\">Gio Swaby<\/a> is my guest today, and I could not be more thrilled. I met Gio a few years ago at an art show in Vancouver, and I&#8217;ve been following her ever since&#8230; lately she&#8217;s been hard to keep up with! <em>Spoiler Alert:<\/em> She just had her first solo show in New York and it SOLD OUT. I asked Gio <em>all <\/em>of my questions, and her answers covered everything from going to church in a bathing suit and jeans, to preparing for her first solo museum show&#8230; yep, quite the gamut! Look\/listen right up there under Gio at her recent show in New York, or subscribe on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/podcast\/jealous-curator-art-for-your\/id996338562\">Apple Podcasts<\/a>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/2ELjX4nIVWpI3XMNW139WN\">Spotify.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>First, this is some of Gio&#8217;s work I saw the night we met, way back in 2018 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/free-bombay-sapphire-artisan-series-exhibition-happening-vancouver\">&#8220;Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series&#8221;<\/a> show:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/11\/labor-and-learning\/gio2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38429\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gio2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"4365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See? THAT is why I had to track her down at the party! So. Good.<\/p>\n<p>The next series I saw &#8211; thanks to Instagram &#8211; included a few of these pieces. These are the ones she often hangs in large grids and or salon style:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/11\/labor-and-learning\/gio3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38430\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38430\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gio3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"3085\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Love! The pieces above are from two series. The solid silhouettes are from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gioswaby.com\/copy-of-she-used-to-be-scared-of-hair\"><em>&#8220;New Growth&#8221;<\/em><\/a>, and the &#8216;drawings&#8217; are part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gioswaby.com\/my-hands-are-clean\"><em>&#8220;My Hands Are Clean&#8221;<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next, just a few of my faves from Gio&#8217;s recent solo show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.claireoliver.com\/exhibits\/gio-swaby-both-sides-of-the-sun\/\"><em>&#8220;Both Sides of the Sun&#8221;<\/em><\/a>, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.claireoliver.com\/\">Claire Oliver Gallery<\/a> in New York:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/11\/labor-and-learning\/gio4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38431\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gio4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"3919\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I said it before and I&#8217;ll say it again&#8230; <em>What the wha!?<\/em> I love them all so much.<\/p>\n<p>And, what Gio and I both love more than we can say:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/11\/labor-and-learning\/gio5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38432\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thejealouscurator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gio5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"2849\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Black women and girls &#8220;seeing themselves&#8221; in Gio&#8217;s work. No wonder she cried when those photos started showing up online. And yes, that&#8217;s Claire with Gio in the final photo. A force of nature x TWO!
