i’m jealous of debra broz

Bunnies with misplaced ears, two-headed lambs, and a, um… bunateal?  Seriously, would you expect anything less from me heading into Easter weekend?  All of these strange little ceramic misfits are from Oddities, a series by Austin based artist Debra Broz. Oh boy, I sure hope I get a basket full of these on Sunday morning… ok, and maybe just a little bit of chocolate. Happy weekend everyone! xo

i’m jealous of angela rossi

Oh yes! I would happily serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert on any of these weird little miss-matched animal portrait plates by LA based artist Angela Rossi. Don’t worry… I won’t serve venison.

i’m jealous of ruan hoffmann

Dishware or art? I’m going with ‘art’, because even though it would be hilarious to serve a piece of chocolate cake on that guy’s forehead, I just don’t think I could bring myself to do something like that to the beautiful work of Pretoria based artist Ruan Hoffmann. No – I think I’ll just hang these on the wall, and skip dessert tonight thank you very much.

{Thanks to Louis for sending Ruan’s work my way!}

i’m jealous of lynda draper

Dear Santa,

I have been very good this year… therefore, I would really, really, really like one of these! You’re going to have to pop down to Australia to pick it up though. Just park the sleigh when you hit Sydney and drop into the ceramics studio of Lynda Draper. I’m not fussy, so any of these ridiculously lovely/whimsical animal pieces will do {although I do have a fondness for that owl!}

Thank you… fly safe!

{Oh, and speaking of statuesque animals, pop on over to sfgirlbybay today… the house that jealousy built now has a trophy room!}

i’m jealous of robin van valkenburgh

These lovely slip cast sculptures by Robin Van Valkenburgh look like a ceramic ode to a very bizarre dream… a dream that I’m assuming was the result of getting cozy with a tub of marshmallow fluff ice cream and a copy of Alice in Wonderland moments before falling asleep. Hm, maybe I’ll give that a try and see what happens… let’s just hope that I don’t hear “Danny the baby lamb” whisper my name in a tiny little voice *shudder*

i’m jealous of ain cocke

I’m not sure how to begin writing about the beautiful and powerful work of New York based artist Ain Cocke. Maybe I’ll let him do it…

“Gender theorists and historians have posited that the first half of the 20th century was the end of a period where male intimacy was allowed without the burden of specific identities like “homosexual,” which imposed restrictions on behavior between men as much as clarified and codified it.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself! I love how he’s taken these images of soldiers, and blended them with flowery, almost Rococo detailing. If the backgrounds were different, say a manly Navy boat, or a bloody battlefield, homosexuality wouldn’t even be inferred, but swap those out for lush gardens and some rosy cheeks and suddenly the closeness of the men seems sexual. Amazing really. Ah, the power of gold leaf and ceramic flowers!

i’m jealous of abigail ahern

Yes, yes, a million times YES! I am going to need all of these fabulous, vintagey {not a word, but still applicable}, ceramic animal lamps by UK designer Abigail Ahern. Ok, I may not currently have a room that would suit them, but I’m willing to completely redecorate in order to make that poodle work! You can visit her beautiful atelier for all of your pelican, greyhound, poodle lamp needs… oh, and don’t even get me started on her wallpaper!

i’m jealous of lisa grue

Yes. I am going to need these. I will then invite all of you over for dinner. We will eat lasagna right out of the pan, because nobody is puttin’ anything on my pom-pom plates! Sorry, but illustrator/artist/pom-pom genius Lisa Grue worked way too hard for us to mess them up!

august 28th ~ 29th

Junk? I don’t think so. Gorgeous, eclectic, vintage, upcycled… yeah, that’s a better description of the amazing work that can be found daily on Junkculture, a fabulous blog that inspires me on a regular basis. When I asked him, ie., “the Junkculture guy” {I have no idea what his real name is – but hey, who am I to judge!}, to be one of my jealous weekend guests, I didn’t know how he’d be able to choose from all of the great artists on his site. Well, he narrowed it down and came back with a really, really good one!

I’m jealous of Richard Slee {and I think you’ll be too!}.

Richard Slee is one of Britain’s most important contemporary ceramic artists. His work attempts to challenge every conventional notion of that genre by messing with the cultural and historic possibilities of the ceramic object, using puns, humour and his vast array of craft skills to transform the ordinary into the surprising.

Find out more about Richard’s work here.

Ooh, you were right… I am totally jealous! So jealous in fact that i can’t control myself… here are a few of my favourite pieces:

So good! Thanks for stopping by “Junkculture guy”… Come back any time! ; )

i’m jealous of stephen johnson

‘Now isn’t that lovely’… yes indeed! Oh, and that also happens to be the title of this series by London based artist Stephen Johnson. I’m sure my grandmother had at least half of these little figurines on her living room shelf… why on earth did it never occur to me to stick them all together, delicately balanced on the nose of a brass deer? Damn it.
