This is not a new story, but it’s just so beautiful that I had to write about it! Jiyeon Song created this amazing, experimental, typographic, and literally poetic sculpture called “The One Day Poem Pavilion”. The words to the poem are revealed as the sun passes over the sculpture, shining through a series of perforations. Depending on when you happen to walk by, you’d only see one or two lines of the poem… unless you sat very still, from 8am until 4pm, and watched the words slowly appear and disappear, revealing the entire six line poem. So amazing. But wait, there’s more:

“The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice. During the summer solstice, the poem will contain the theme of “new life”. During the winter solstice, the poem will be on “reflection and the passing of time.”

Yep, I’m in complete awe.

Sigh… but not a huge sigh, otherwise this stunningly delicate installation by Swiss artist Regine Ramseier might come floating down around us! Ok, well, maybe not. If she managed to get two thousand dandelion blowies {yes, I call them “blowies”} from a grassy meadow to this little white room, our sighs of astonishment shouldn’t damage them in any way. How did she do it? Well, have a look at the images below for a blow-by-blow {pun totally intended} of their journey:

Step One: pick 2000 blowies from a beautiful meadow. Step Two: spray blowies with a light adhesive. Step Three: hang them upside down in your car. Step four: place them in a custom made, hole-punched blowie palette. Step Five: hang a gorgeous installation for ArToll Summer Lab 2011… and exhale. Carefully.

Ok, if my telephone books and bill envelopes looked like the work of Canadian artist {aka paper cutting genius} Kristiina Lahde, I would never need to recycle again! Gorgeous.

Gorgeous Hermes scarves, video of a beautiful woman, and a strategically placed wind machine. This story is not new, but that doesn’t make it any less brilliant. Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka installed this piece at Maison Hermes in Toyko over the 2009 ~ 2010 Christmas holidays. Oh, how I wish I had seen this in person, but I didn’t, so I guess You Tube will have to do… sigh, so beautiful.

Orange thread… mountains… gold… stripes… wood… STOP! I can’t take any more – it’s all so amazing! I love these sculptures by LA based artist Aili Schmeltz. Stunning, sharp geometric shapes married perfectly with soft organic elements. I was going to try to explain what this work is all about, but it will be so much easier to let Aili do it:

My most recent body of work examines my fascination and love/hate relationship with the city of Los Angeles, where I currently live. Los Angeles has a sordid environmental history as a strange apocalyptic theme park. It’s plush, manicured landscape is a reminder of both a forced growth in an otherwise desert geography and as a monument to man’s ingenuity made possible by diverting an unfathomable amount of water from distant sources. I am fascinated by the hybridized structures and blatant artifice of the city in both it’s natural and man made environments where hill top homes float precariously overhead on earth that has a topographical complexity of embedded catastrophe.

Ok, so do you remember when I wrote about the work of Felice Varini? If you do, then these installations might look somewhat familiar. They were done by Joseph Egan and Hunter Thomson, students at the Chelsea College of Art & Design. They wanted to create a body of work that explored a “possible relationship between graphic design and architecture”, and while doing so they “discovered the process of anamorphosis as used by the fine artist Felice Varini.” Well, I think it’s safe to say that they did, in fact, nail this assignment… A+!

As a kid, one of my most prized possessions was my sticker book. I had a designated page for “puffies”, “sparklies”, and of course, “scratch n’ sniffs”. I think I may have lost my mind if American artists Payton Turner & Brian Kaspr had popped by to install their sticker wallpaper in my bedroom! I mean, come on… when you read a description like this: “Each wallpaper pattern is made up of thousands of hand-applied stickers, and can be removed and re-applied in any space”, how can any self-respecting sticker collector not be jealous? So insanely amazing… Hm, I wonder if there are any scratch n’ sniffs in there?

Hm, I don’t think I have ever shown work this way before… in context, inside someone’s home. I have to say, it really makes me want to have Chicago based artist Alex Menocal come over to install a few of his very bold, complex/yet simple, triangle configurations on my wall… pink & yellow for me, please!

Gasp! Be still my beating heart – Doily cobwebs… hm, or cobweb doilies… well, either way, I’m left slightly breathless. I wish so much that I had been able to experience London based artist Shane Waltener‘s ode to Auntie Peggy before she departed.

Ahhh, does this make anyone else want to go swimming… in a room filled with floating furniture? Me too! This installation, titled Green House, is the perfect combination of surreal and serene. It’s truly amazing what Korean artist Kyung Woo Han has done with some old furniture, an empty room, the most lovely shade of green paint, and just a touch of optical illusion.
