it’s a…

Happy Hallowe’en! Yep, it’s the perfect day for giving treats, and boy oh boy, have I got a good one for you! The stunningly beautiful art magazine, Fine Line, is going to package up their first four issues into a neat little box set for two, that’s right, two lucky readers! All you have to do is “like” their Facebook page, and leave a comment here {so I can draw your name/know how to give you the good news!} I’ll do the draw on Thursday November 3rd, at noon Pacific time, and announce the two winners here {leave me your email too if you’d like!} Yep, that’s it… easier than dressing up and going door to door looking for treats, don’t ya think?
Oh, and here are a few of my favorite artists, that have been featured in these first four issues {ie. a little preview of the treat!}:

{Jesse Draxler // Javier Pinon // Hollie Chastain // Amira Fritz // Jonathan Zawada}
i’m jealous of jiyeon song

This is not a new story, but it’s just so beautiful that I had to write about it! Jiyeon Song created this amazing, experimental, typographic, and literally poetic sculpture called “The One Day Poem Pavilion”. The words to the poem are revealed as the sun passes over the sculpture, shining through a series of perforations. Depending on when you happen to walk by, you’d only see one or two lines of the poem… unless you sat very still, from 8am until 4pm, and watched the words slowly appear and disappear, revealing the entire six line poem. So amazing. But wait, there’s more:
“The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice. During the summer solstice, the poem will contain the theme of “new life”. During the winter solstice, the poem will be on “reflection and the passing of time.”
Yep, I’m in complete awe.
i’m jealous of tom berenz

This gorgeous series of oil paintings on panel, by American artist Tom Berenz, is titled quite appropriately “Flood”. Beautiful, quiet, and sad all at the same time, his work depicts the strangely peaceful aftermath of major natural disasters. The imagery is haunting, and his color choices are fantastic! Love.

i’m jealous of ann marshall

Tattooed girls, ornate wallpaper, and a bunny with a neck cone. Clearly I have no choice but to be jealous of these lovely mixed media portraits by American artist Ann Marshall. So pretty, yet kinda weird… my favorite combination!
ps. A bit of news to share with you…
Yesterday the November issue of Sunset Magazine hit the shelves… and there’s a little article about The Jealous Curator in it! Very exciting! Thanks so much Sunset xo
i’m jealous of regine ramseier

Sigh… but not a huge sigh, otherwise this stunningly delicate installation by Swiss artist Regine Ramseier might come floating down around us! Ok, well, maybe not. If she managed to get two thousand dandelion blowies {yes, I call them “blowies”} from a grassy meadow to this little white room, our sighs of astonishment shouldn’t damage them in any way. How did she do it? Well, have a look at the images below for a blow-by-blow {pun totally intended} of their journey:

Step One: pick 2000 blowies from a beautiful meadow. Step Two: spray blowies with a light adhesive. Step Three: hang them upside down in your car. Step four: place them in a custom made, hole-punched blowie palette. Step Five: hang a gorgeous installation for ArToll Summer Lab 2011… and exhale. Carefully.

i’m jealous of kristiina lahde

Ok, if my telephone books and bill envelopes looked like the work of Canadian artist {aka paper cutting genius} Kristiina Lahde, I would never need to recycle again! Gorgeous.
ps. The tower of phone books is titled, quite perfectly, “Hive”. Oh, and thanks so much to Sheila for sending me a link to Kristiina’s work! I was thrilled to add such a great portfolio to my bookmarks list… my telephone book, on the other hand, was not so happy about it… snip snip!
i’m jealous of alyson fox’s book

Look what arrived in my mailbox yesterday! Yes, it’s the beautiful new book featuring the photographs of Austin based artist Alyson Fox. Now, to be totally honest, I didn’t even know that Alyson did photography work, as she’s best known for her beautifully bizarre drawings {which I absolutely love!}. Well, I’ve officially added this book, titled “A Shade of Red”, to the list of reasons to be jealous of Alyson Fox. She took portraits of 100 women, with basically nothing in common, except that they were all wearing the same shade of red lipstick. There is a quote at the beginning of the book that gave me shivers… and made me want to get myself a tube of bright red lipstick:
It was shortly after the British Red Cross arrived, though it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived…Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet red lips….That lipstick started to give them back their humanity.
~ Colonel Gonin (commenting on the liberation of the Bergen-Belson concentration camp)
Thank you so much Alyson… this is an amazing addition to my collection of art books! xo
{The book was published by Chronicle Books, and be purchased here.}
i’m jealous of ye rin mok

Ok, I’ll admit it… it was that pink couch that got me! I have a thing for simple, everyday images that might not be expected subject matter.. enter the portfolio of Seoul born, LA based photographer Ye Rin Mok. So many lovely, simple images. Sigh. Yes, it started with the pink couch, but it didn’t take long before the green shag carpet, and polka-dot underthings had me putting today’s post together.
{Her work has been featured in a long list of magazines, including a few of my favorites: Bust, W, and Dwell.}
i’m jealous of anonymous brazilians

Retratos Pintados from Northeastern Brazil
Anonymous
c. 1940-1980
Don’t have a gold watch, but always wished you did? No problem. Unsightly blemish? Totally taken care of! Ah yes, when a black and white photograph {of what you actually look like} just won’t do! Retratos Pintados are photographs that were hand-painted by artists, during the middle of the 20th century in Northeastern Brazil. They used layers of oil-washes to beautifully enhance, well, everything! Eu amo ♥

i’m jealous of victoria reichelt

I found these lovely oil paintings {yes, these are paintings!}, by Australian artist Victoria Reichelt, on frankie magazine’s website… because that first giant stack of beautifully painted magazines, is in fact, a stack of frankie’s! I have a similar pile at my house, but alas, I have never painted them in all of their towering glory. Sigh… so amazing.
