i’m jealous of allison diaz

Weaved photographs? Nope. Vintage photographs chopped up into perfect little diamonds, mixed up with each other,  and then rearranged into new dizzying images. Whoa. Today’s lovely touch of vertigo is brought to you by Californian artist Allison Diaz.

i’m jealous of amy wilson faville

San Francisco based artist Amy Wilson Faville made a comment on one of my posts last week, and now I have a comment for her… Hey Amy, I love your CART series! How could I not, really? Unique subject matter, lovely graphite drawings, and ooh, don’t even get me started on those layers of flattened textile patterns!

{oh, and pop by sfgirlbybay… it’s laundry day at ‘the house that jealousy built‘}

the jealous curator goes to washington (1)

Yep! I’m curating a show in Washington DC this March. Oh my word – I’m curating a show in Washington DC this March!? Seriously, I could not be more thrilled, and wanted to make sure I was keeping all of you in the loop! So, here it goes, the first post in a new series… I’ll try and keep it short ; )

This fall I was contacted by the Honfleur Gallery in Washington DC. They asked if I’d be interested in curating a show in their 2011 schedule… umm… YES! Ok great, that was taken care of, now I just had to come up with something. After a week of brainstorming like a maniac, I ended up submitting three ideas – the first one was a solo show, and the other two were group shows. Now, I have to admit, I loved all of the ideas, but was so excited when they picked the solo show featuring Canadian artist, Ben Skinner. Not only do I love his work {he was one of the first people I ever wrote about, and last summer, I bought one of his pieces at The Cheaper Show}, but his portfolio is filled with work that speaks directly to the issues that are affecting Anacostia, the neighborhood that the gallery calls home. Ben is currently working away on a whole bunch of fantastic pieces. Some of the work featured above is similar to the new pieces he’s creating, along with installations, a text-based mural, and site-specific pieces in the neighborhood around the gallery. It’s gonna be amazing! Anywho, that’s all for now, but I’ll be sure to give you a sneak-peek as the work progresses!

{The show opens on March 4th 2011 and runs until April 8th. Wish us luck, and I hope all of you can come!}

i’m jealous of will cotton

How can you look at these sweet and dreamy paintings by American artist Will Cotton and not want to run out to get yourself a venti, with whip, peppermint mocha… to sip while hanging out naked with Katy Perry. Ok, maybe just get the coffee! It’s a bit too cold to be showing up at Starbucks without your clothes. And that goes for you too Katy! Yep, Will painted the cover for Katy Perry’s latest album, and art directed her video for California Gurls. Do you think I could get him to art direct my gingerbread house? I promise to keep my shirt on.

i’m jealous of lu cong

I’m in awe of these stunning/beautifully soft/sort of sad portraits by Denver based artist Lu Cong. If I owned one of these large scale paintings {they all range from about 3 to 5 feet square} I think the majority of my day would be lost staring into those stunning/beautifully soft/sort of sad eyes that have managed to completely pull me in. Sigh… so gorgeous.

i’m jealous of cassandra smith

Ahh, it seems like just yesterday that I was writing about Cassandra Smith… oh wait a second, that was yesterday! Normally I wouldn’t write about someone two days in a row, but when you’re the co-founder of a beautiful new art magazine, and your personal work looks like this, well then, you leave me no choice. My heart skipped a beat when I opened her site and saw a huge field of animal hide covered in sparkly sequins. Oh Cassandra Smith, you had me at hello.

{The only thing that’s killing me about finding this work , is that I found it a week too late. It would have been perfect for the post I wrote on sfgirlbybay last Tuesday… Damn it.}

i’m jealous of jessica & cassandra

Jessica Steeber and Cassandra Smith are artists and curators – oh, and they’re also the co-creators of Fine Line, a brand new quarterly print magazine, based in Milwaukee, that just came out last week.  It’s ad and article free… in other words, it’s a whole bunch of big, beautiful, glossy, uninterrupted, art-filled pages. Um, yes, I’m jealous. If The Jealous Curator was a magazine, it would be this magazine. I love so many of the artists featured in the first issue, and have actually written about a handful of them. Sigh. Nice work ladies – it’s gorgeous.

{Artists featured above… cover ~ Christopher Gorski; Jeremy Daigneault; Sidney Pink; Blaise Pascal; Benedetta Falugi; Hollie Chastain; Van Morrison quote}

psst… you can buy issue 1 online right at this very moment. enjoy!

i’m jealous of melanie bilenker

Brooches, rings and pendants that capture quiet, domestic moments delicately illustrated using human hair. Wait… what?! Yep, jewelry designer/artist Melanie Bilenker has actually used her own hair to create this these lovely pieces. Thankfully she has a section on her website to explain exactly how she does this {because I could not figure it out on my own}:

“The Victorians kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love. In much the same way, I secure my memories through photographic images rendered in lines of my own hair, the physical remnants.”

i’m jealous of denise kupferschmidt

New York based artist Denise Kupferschmidt dissects old books, and then carefully arranges the cut pieces into beautiful paper totems. I haven’t said this lately {well, out loud}, but I think today is perfect for it… Damn. I wish I thought of this. Yep, that just felt right.

{Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all of the Americans reading this! Oh, and ps. I’m thankful for Junkculture… because that’s where I found Denise’s work!}

i’m jealous of lisa golightly

Oh, so pretty! Little bits and pieces of sunny childhood memories brought lovingly to you by American painter Lisa Golightly. Now, some of  you might know her as Kiki & Polly, as both her portfolio site, and Etsy shop, go by that name. Why? Here is Lisa’s very sweet explanation: “The name, in fact, is inspired by my daughter’s love of a bird she named Kiki, and for her imaginary friend Polly. Polly no longer visits our house as she once did, but I try to keep the spirit of childhood, wonder and imagination with me in my Portland, Oregon studio.” That makes me want to cry! Am I alone here? Anyone?

{…want two more reasons to be jealous of Lisa? One of her pieces was featured in Martha Stewart’s Holiday Issue (p.54), AND she was also selected to have a table at the Martha Stewart Holiday Craft Sale coming up on December 4th in New York! Congratulations Lisa, and good luck xo}
