i’m jealous of aida wild

aida_wild

Never have I wanted 3D glasses as badly as I do right at this very moment. If you have a pair kicking around {and you know you do}, throw them on and let me know how amazing these screen prints by London based artist Aida Wild really are. Mind you, I’m already pretty jealous. Perhaps it’s best that I don’t see them in their full glory… the whole 3D thing might push me over the edge.

{Got the glasses, now you just need to own one of these awesome prints? No problem… a quick visit to Nelly Duff Gallery & Shop will get you all set up.}

i’m jealous of peter callesen

My scrap A4 paper usually turns into several grocery lists, or a make-shift note pad beside the phone, ultimately ending up in the recycle bin. Why, oh why, did I not think of intricately cutting it into beautiful, crisp, white scenes of impending doom?! Damn it. I would love to see what Danish artist Peter Callesen‘s grocery list looks like… I bet it’s gorgeous!

i’m jealous of esther derkx

I don’t know about you, but a speedo-clad man doing leg lifts on my dessert plate might just inspire me not to eat that last bite of cake. Dutch artist Esther Derkx’s screen printed dancers and athletes are such a creative, hilarious, and beautiful way to breathe new life into abandoned, mismatched crockery… and will probably help all of us shed a pound or two. I’m putting my fork down and starting on a few leg lifts as we speak. 1, 2, 3, 4…

i’m jealous of shauna richardson

Oh sure, just some beautifully hand-crafted crocheted animal trophies {aka Crochetdermy™}, a few of which are even kind of cute… until British artist Shauna Richardson strategically places them somewhere isolated and poorly lit! I think it’s safe to say that the ‘beautifully hand-crafted’ bear in the underground parking lot would require me to go home for a change of underpants. Oh come on, don’t judge me… you know you’d be in the same situation.

{Thanks to Liesl for bringing Shauna’s work to my attention!}

i’m jealous of the quilters of gee’s bend

quilts_geesbend1

This is not a new story, but it’s new to me and it makes me jealous… so here it is!

This is a sampling of work by a group of African American women from a small area in Alabama known as Gee’s Bend. Saying that these women ‘make quilts’ just sounds far too everyday for how impressive this bold and meaningful work really is. They can’t be called anything other than artists, because not only is their work stunning to look at, it’s also a huge part of American history/culture. There are so many stories, and heaps of interesting information about these ladies that I can’t possibly describe it all here. Luckily for me {and you} there is a book called Gee’s Bend: The Women And Their Quilts that has images of their work, along with in-depth biographies of each woman… is it too early to start my Christmas list?

{Originally I had 5 quilts in this post but as you’ll see in the comments below, one of them wasn’t a quilt by the ladies of Gee’s Bend… so I’ve removed it. Thanks Richard.}

jealousy on hold…

Due to a family emergency I’m not going to be posting for a day or two… but I’ll be back soon.

Thanks : )

i’m jealous of joe ryckebosch

joeryckebosch

This is going to be a quick post… I’m just rushing out the door to the thrift shop to search for a bit of found imagery, and then to the art store to pick up a bunch of multi-coloured masking tape. Um, don’t tell Joe Ryckebosch. He’ll think I’m going to copy him… which, of course, I’m not.

{Thank you to ‘my love for you is a stampede of horses‘ for introducing me to Joe’s work.}

i’m jealous of gretchen wagoner

Gold chandeliers and wildlife. Perhaps these collages are the result of a few bizarre dreams that Gretchen Wagoner had while staying at a very fancy hotel in the middle of a forest? Hm, maybe I should get the name of that hotel.

i’m jealous of liz steketee

We all have childhood memories that probably aren’t exactly right. They are the way that you remember events and people, which may have been influenced by the story that your Uncle Ted told over, and over about that event/person, putting a picture into your head that you now believe to be a memory. Well, American photographer Liz Steketee didn’t want to be proved wrong by a photo, so she’s taken matters into her own hands with her series titled Reconstructed Memories. By scanning and combining her own family photos, she is able to truly reconstruct these images to conform to her personal memories or, in some cases, change things completely to the way she would have preferred life to be. And so now, thanks to Liz, Uncle Ted’s story will live on forever.

i’m jealous of rachel denny… again

racheldenny_again1

Rachel Denny was the second artist that I ever wrote about… what can I say, over one year later and I’m still a sucker for cable knit and deer heads. Anyway, she has a bunch of new work {foxes, and ducks, and rams oh my!} in her latest series titled Out of the Woods that she’s been constructing in her beautiful backyard studio in Portland… uh, did you catch how many things there are to be jealous of in that last sentence alone? Sigh.
