I don’t write about abstract art that often, but yowza… these compositions, those colors! Gor.ge.ous. And, if they look this good on screen, just imagine what they must look like in person! Well, if you live in Berlin you won’t have to imagine much longer… Emma Coulter, a UK born, Australian artist, currently living and working in Berlin has a show opening this Saturday evening. It’s titled Viscerality, and you should go.

Ok, here’s the thing about me… I love portraits. Painted, drawn, photographed, embroidered, whatever… I love portraits. So, imagine my delight when I came upon the work of LA based artist Steve Kim. These pieces are clearly from two different bodies of work, but you guessed it, I could not decide which one made me more jealous. Rich oil paint, with a lovely lack of detail? Or, delicate, blue, barely-there colored pencil on paper?
Hm… nope. I still can’t decide.

There is something so familiar, comforting, and brilliantly mundane about these paintings by LA based artist Sarah Dougherty. Have I been here before? During university… or traveling maybe? Well, for whatever reason, {maybe because I’m constantly clipping trendy magazines in a lame attempt to redecorate my house}, I find it so calming to see mismatched, cozy, imperfect spaces where ordinary people live ordinary lives. Maybe I’ll just put the perfect paint chips down, and have a martini instead. Ahh, yes… that’s much better.
{Thanks to Rebecca for sending me the link to Sarah’s work.}
I wrote about Fine Line, an insanely beautiful art magazine, when the first issue came out last year. They are now on Issue 4, and it, of course, is as lovely as ever. Here’s the latest news though… they are now selling limited edition prints by some of the artists that they’ve featured. The work is gorgeous {a few pieces are shown above}, and very affordable {as in $20 affordable!}… what a perfect combination! Pick yourself up a subscription, and a print or two from the Fine Line Etsy shop.

If you live anywhere even kinda close to Portsmouth, New Hampshire I know what you should do tonight! It’s the opening of The Enormous Tiny Art Show at Nahcotta. Yes, that’s right, there will be an enormous amount {50 artists are participating} of tiny original art {10″x10″ or smaller}. The line-up of artists is insane… insane I tell you!!! I managed to control myself and only show a few of my favorites pieces, but I could have easily shown work from all 50 artists! Seriously. Ok, so back to planning your Friday night for you: Tonight, September 2nd from 5 ~ 8pm… but if you can’t make it to the opening, don’t worry, the show will be up until October 2nd. Have an enormously fun, yet tiny, time!

So, for whatever reason, I was in the mood to write about something golden, or glittery today {fall trend?}. Anyway, I spent hours searching for just that, and of course, who hooked me up? Yes, one of my favorite artists ever… Martha Rich. I have never seen these pieces before, but they have totally hit the spot for me today. Gold, sparkle, a big mouth, a tiny lady head, a hot dog, and a very structurally sound bra… ahh, exactly what I needed. Thank you Martha. Again.
{These pieces were part of a show called “Nuts, Charm & Rejection” at CultureFix, in collaboration with Sloan Fine Art Projects, in New York last January.}
Beautiful, ghostly, illuminated shapes that hover weightlessly over large scale c-prints… oh yes, I’m jealous. Canadian artist Claire Falkenberg applies highly mineralized oil paint to her photographs of dark, abandoned, over-grown, trash-filled places, and transforms them into an ethereal experience! I would love to see this huge work in person… the last image is titled Thorns, and is 59″ x 58″. Stunning!
{Thank you so much to Tiffany for sending me a link to Claire’s work.}
I would love to spend the afternoon with American artist Kirstin Lamb so we could talk beauty queens, pastries, and raw meat. Apparently she “became obsessed with classical still life and notions of stacking and heaping during her final year of graduate study in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005.” But I want to know why she’s stacking the things she’s stacking! Yep, I have a lot of questions about these beautifully bizarre gouache drawings. First question… where can I get one?! Oh, and look at that, the answer is right down there:
{I found Kirstin’s work [for sale!] on the always amazing Little Paper Planes.}
Hm, I don’t think I have ever shown work this way before… in context, inside someone’s home. I have to say, it really makes me want to have Chicago based artist Alex Menocal come over to install a few of his very bold, complex/yet simple, triangle configurations on my wall… pink & yellow for me, please!
{first three: tape // middle three: screenprint // last one: vinyl paint }
Mundane icons of everyday life. My favorite!
Just imagine the kind of a party we could get going with all this stuff… and, we’d even be able to clean up when it was over. On the guest list? Well, obviously you and me, with the guest of honor being the artist known as El Grio. Oh, and you better believe that I’d invite Jonna Pedersen, and Vincent Pacheco. Something tells me that this might just be their kind o’ party!
