i’m jealous of archie scott gobber

archie_scott_gobber1

Oh, how I love clever {and beautifully executed} typographic art. Sculpture, painting, mixed media, whatever… I love it all. Therefore, I have no choice but to love American artist Archie Scott Gobber, because clearly he does it all. Hm, I guess I’ll have to divide my heart between Archie and Wayne White, although I may have to fight Marty Walker for both of them. His gallery reps these two typographic geniuses so, ultimately, I’m jealous of him too. Phew, that’s a lot of guys to be jealous of in one day. I’m spent.

Ah, there’s nothing quite as peaceful as gentle spring sunlight filtering through your window, casting soft shadows of the leaves and branches outside. Wait a second… what the?!… THAT’S PAINT! Those aren’t soft lovely shadows at all, they’re soft lovely paintings by American artist Mary Temple. The top three images are from a project called Extended Afternoon, Aldrich Museum, and the fourth piece is actually how I found her. It’s her contribution to an amazing non-profit organization called RxArt based in New York. Their mandate is to curate ‘installations in hospital settings, [providing] a creative surrounding that helps to relieve stress and anxiety.’

So inspiring on so many levels.

i’m jealous of wayne white’s show

It’s Saturday… do you have plans for tonight? Well, if you live in Dallas {and want to make me insanely jealous} I suggest that you get yourself down to the Marty Walker Gallery. Wayne White’s new show, I Fell 37 Miles to Earth 100 Years Ago, is opening tonight from 6 ~ 8pm. This show of his typographic paintings and sculptures will be on from February 20th ~ March 20th. Ok so, just to recap, I’m crazy jealous of Wayne White… and pretty much anyone that lives in Dallas and gets to see this show in person.

i’m jealous of jennifer sanchez

I want to know how New York based artist Jennifer Sanchez knows when she’s done. So many vibrant colours, layers and techniques, yet all of these mixed media paintings seem perfectly balanced. It’s the loose, dripping paint over the very controlled geometric shapes that makes me so jealous of her. After all of that work on the ‘perfect parts’, I’d have a pretty hard time loading up a brush and letting the paint drip where it may, so to speak. What an amazing trust she must have in herself. Personally, I need a brush with an ‘undo’ command… then I’d be all set.

{Thanks to curbs & stoops for reminding me about Jennifer’s work. Out of my bookmark list and into a post!}

i’m jealous of EVERYONE in this series

brooklyn_portland_series1

Today, two art blogs, Habit of Art {Portland} and Art Hound {Brooklyn}, are joining forces on a collaborative six week artist interview series that features twelve well-known, independent artists from, well, obviously… Portland and Brooklyn. So, who’s on the list? Julia Rothman, Anthony Georgis, and Kate Bingaman-Burt just to name a few. I know. It’s gonna be good. Every Monday an artist from both cities will be interviewed, ultimately creating a dialogue between these two incredibly vibrant art communities. I myself have a few questions for this entire group. Things like, ‘Why are you trying to crush my soul with your talent? Why? What did I ever do to you?’ Yep, stuff like that.

{Images above are by 1) Julia Rothman 2) Anthony Georgis 3) Kate Bingaman-Burt}

i’m jealous of jordan owens

I have painted on a lot of stuff. Wood, old signs, and even a broken TV {don’t ask}, but damn, I really wish I’d thought of painting teeny-tiny portraits on discarded colour chips. Luckily for all of us, Jordan Owens didn’t toss them out after the reno, instead she turned them into art… I wonder what she could have done with that TV?

{I found Jordan Owens on the always lovely Pikaland.}

i’m jealous of wayne white

When I found these, I actually felt my soul being crushed by the weight of the jealousy.  I have a studio full of thrift store landscapes that I’ve been collecting for about a year. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them, but believe you me, it was gonna be AMAZING… but Wayne White beat me to it! He got to the thrift store first, bought all of the best vintage landscapes, and then {just to add insult to injury} he knew exactly how to change these 1970’s Bob Ross-ish oil paintings into modern, typographic masterpieces. LUV HURTZ indeed… I think my soul needs a bandage.

{Marty Walker Gallery, Dallas Texas, Wayne White: I Fell 37 Miles to Earth 100 Years Ago, February 20 – March 20, 2010 – Opening: Saturday, February 20, 6-8pm … you know you want to go!}

i’m jealous of bonnie lewis

Oh Bonnie Lewis, if only I had found you before I posted my head + shoulders portraits show last week.

These lovely, and very colourful ladies, are from a series called Daughter Tales. Twelve of the paintings in the series are titled All Eve, followed by a number to distinguish them from each other. So, here’s my theory… either these girls’ parents weren’t very creative when it came to handing out names, or it’s a biblical reference to Eve, of Adam and Eve fame. Of course, both of these early morning theories could be completely wrong {I haven’t had coffee yet}. Bonnie, if you’re out there, let us know if I’m right, or if you do in fact know twelve different girls named Eve.

Flotsam’s Wonder Tonic… Oh, I gotta get me some of that! This amazing carnival-esque/folk art installation at Soap Gallery {San Francisco} is the creation of artist/advertising guy/father/surfer Mike Shine. I’m not only jealous of him, but of everyone that actually got to see this in person {see that guy drinking a beer, yeah… I’m jealous of that guy}. Mike just had another similar installation piece, called Flotsam’s Wonder Wagon, on display at the SFMOMA about a week ago, and I missed that too… I bet that beer guy was there.

i’m jealous of nicole hayden

Well, I’ve got my evening planned. These soft, over exposed looking paintings by American artist Nicole Hayden make me want to spend the entire night on my couch wrapped in a cozy blanket, eating popcorn and watching old movies. Ok, that’s it, I’m making popcorn right now… who wants some?
