That’s it… I’m packing everything I own into a bunch of tiny little pink and yellow suitcases, and then moving myself into this series of still life photographs {titled Our Home My Home} by New York based artist Erin O’Keefe. When I first saw these images, I couldn’t decide if she was trying to convey a sense of emptiness, or the promise of something new. Turns out, the answer is ‘yes’. Here, in Erin’s words, is what this project is about:

The photographs in this series are still life set ups that include images of various empty rooms that were part of a year of transition. I emptied my childhood home after the death of my father, and moved to a new home with my husband and children. I am interested in the tension between the space of the still life in my studio, and the spaces depicted in the photographs.

Teepee/mountain-ish/geometric assemblages by Vancouver based artist Aaron Moran. Yep, a little found wood and some insanely well-chosen house paint, and I’m completely sold. Now, how to wrap this for Christmas morning… hm, maybe just a really big bow.

This ain’t no regular library. Nope, this library is actually a series titled Every Book Ever, by Mary Alyssa Block. It consists of over 70 books whose covers she’s meticulously recreated onto the appropriate sized pieces of found wood. Love, love, love! Granted, with this collection of books I might never be able to identify a bird in California, and there’s a very good chance that I’ll over-water my cactus… but hey, that’s the price I’m willing to pay for beautiful art!

Boys in cardigans, holding pigeons. Yep… I’m jealous. I love these drawings {the added colour is oil paint} by Canadian artist Genevieve Dionne. And I’m even more impressed because she didn’t even need a pencil! All of these pieces are done with a very hot little wood burning tool leaving no room for error. I don’t know about you, but I need a little room for error! I’d hate to see what might happen to that boy’s pigeon with a wood burning tool in my hand! Ouch.

Sigh. Oh my word. I love these intricate, amazingly beautiful wooden textiles… wait… what?! Yep, that’s right, wooden textiles. German artist/designer Elisa Strozyk has figured out a way to make wooden fabric, and I could not be more jealous. So smart, and so stunningly beautiful. Um, Santa, if you’re reading this, I really, really want that lamp for Christmas. Thank you!

Um, can you say every little girl’s dream?! Yes, it’s a real-life dollhouse. I really, really, really want to live in this amazing on-site installation by Canadian artist Heather Benning. Granted, that huge plexiglass wall might leave me a little exposed to the local farmers and the odd cow, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for art! Below are images of the transformation… from an old abandoned farmhouse in Manitoba, into, well, my new home:

Sigh… amazing. And, it even comes with a rainbow! Throw in a unicorn grazing on the grass and you’re lookin’ at my childhood dream!

Ahhh, I can almost smell the sweet summer air! Jeff Hamada {of Booooooom!} is the man behind this lovely art project called Little Drifters. He invited anyone who wanted to participate to make a boat completely of out natural elements. Once the twigs, flowers, leaves, and snails were in place, everyone got together and set their creations adrift. So beautiful… and I have to say, I’m looking at pine cones in a whole new light!

American artist Gregory Euclide took the term ‘mixed media’, and seriously ran with it! Here is a quick list of the mediums and objects used to create these insanely amazing, and incredibly beautiful, examples of mixed media… that I really wish I had thought of:

Acrylic paint, eurocast, grass, juniper, lichen, paint can, pine needles, moss, sedum, sponge, cedar, found foam… {pause to inhale, aaannnd continue}… leaves, pencil, photo transfer, polyurethane foam, cigarettes, milkweed, paper, plastic, styrofoam, stone, and wood.

Phew.

I’ve been ‘pushing pixels’ for years, but never quite like this! American printmaker turned sculptor, Shawn Smith uses lots and lots and lots and lots and lots {you get the idea} of tiny wooden pixels, not to mention the odd branch here and there, to play matchmaker between technology and nature. I think it worked… it looks like love to me!

{The final piece above is titled ‘Branchlers’, and I’m going to need it in my house.}
