mac conner

New York based illustrator, Mac Conner has a show currently hanging at the Museum of the City of New York. His work was a staple in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and McCall’s, and in ads for General Motors and United Airlines just to name few… an illustrator who was truly part of the Mad Men era… and now, at age 100 (100!?) he finally has his own, long overdue, solo show featuring decades worth of his work. If you’re in New York between now and January 19, 2015 you really should go and see these beauties in person… I know I will!

{Thanks to GregoryWest for pointing me to this fantastic story}

maría aparicio puentes

Ok, that metallic braid is killing me. I have loved the work of Chilean architect/artist María Aparicio Puentes for ages! This is her newest, most glitteriest work from a series titled “Be Brilliant”… brilliant, indeed! A lot of artists that do this kind of work use found photos, but María actually collaborates with photographers. For this series she worked with Tatjana Radičević, Lukasz Wierzbowski and Ksenija Jovišević. So fantastic!

ps. María is one of the artists in my second book, COLLAGE. Here’s what she did with the starting image that I gave all 30 artists… I love this so much:

stuart mcharrie

Simple, beautifully painted blocks of wood… yep, just goes to show that when the paintbrush is in the right hands, totally mundane objects can become absolutely gorgeous works of art! In this case, those hands belong to London based artist Stuart McHarrie. Beautiful muted palettes. Dimensional yet totally flat. Sigh. Love, love, love.

nathalie cusson

Oh. My. I love these… the palettes, the vintage-ness, the scale… I love it all! This is the work of Canadian designer/illustrator Nathalie Cusson. Gorgeous vintage cars and, well, a skimobile? Yes! I have to admit, although I’m neither a hipster nor a corduroy-clad professor, I do have a thing for old Volvos so that one might be my pick… although I’m pretty sure the pink Citroën wants to come home with me too. Or the Fiat. Yes. I need that pretty blue Fiat.

{Each 22″x18″ print is a limited edition of 10, and they’re only $105! Available here.}

kevin chupik

I’m sure you’d recognize the work of American artist Kevin Chupik… although this looks nothing like it! This new series titled “Clarity of Youth” {that is currently showing at Brett Wesley Gallery in Las Vegas until November 1}, is a totally different direction for him, and I like it! Here is his artist statement from this new show:

“Upon becoming a parent, one sees the world once again through young eyes. The fascinations of youth surge forward to reassert their rightful place of prominence in our collective memories. Planes, trains and ships reaffirm their imposing silhouttes of substance, as we view them through the gaze of this second youth. Board games and figurines suggest a world of imagined histories unfolding as we orient our now adult vision to the simple perspective plane of a child’s view. In the revisitation of these simple moments, a surpisingly sophisticated connection through time becomes established between the generations of the young and aging. Through a diverse collection of materials and techniques, these paintings, drawings and assemblages seek to pay hommage to the to the legitimacy of these deceptively simple, yet profound moments of play. In doing so, one realizes that there was indeed a ” Clarity of Youth”.

Lovely. And so true… I once spent an entire day as a T-Rex, under the careful direction of my little boy.

i heart affordable art

It’s not always easy to find affordable art that you love… but it is possible, I promise! I have all sorts of stuff in my house – a few amazing originals, but honestly, lots and lots of prints from lots and lots of my favorite artists. There is something so energizing about walking into a room and seeing a piece you love hanging on the wall… and when it’s affordable, well, even better! I’ve made a conscious effort to have pieces in my online gallery, GalleryONE, that won’t break the bank. Here are just a few that range from $20 to $200. I hope you find something you like…

kate shaw

Wow. I want to go to there. This is the stunning, large-scale landscape work of Australian artist Kate Shaw. I have no idea how she does this but I LOVE IT! Stunning colors, swirling and glittering textures, and gorgeous negative spaces that make me want to take a swim in a hot pink mountain lake! Kate currently has a show on {that runs until November 1, 2014} at Fehily Contemporary in Melbourne. If you’re there, you really should go and see these beauties in person… and then tell me all about it!

airco caravan

Oh, cool… paintings of vintage motel rooms. Or, orange bedspread clad spaces where grisly deaths occurred. Yep, this series by Amsterdam/New York based artist Airco Caravan, is titled “Crime Scene” – each piece titled for the incident {overdoses, murders, and other creepy situations} that took place in these oh, so 1970s-esque motels… it’s not only the carpet and wallpaper that’s making me shudder.

anthony gerace

GET IT FIXED… love! I wrote about London based artist, Anthony Gerace, a few months ago… but that was for his gorgeous collages. Today is all about his photography {yes, he’s multi-talented!}. These images are from his newest series titled, Box Elder Co. UT, that he recently shot in, you guessed it, Utah! Simple subject matter, beautifully composed. And yes, the beer can stuck on a bush is my absolute favorite.

hsiao-ron cheng

Oh. I looooove the work of Taiwanese artist/illustrator Hsiao-Ron Cheng. I’ve written about her a couple of times over the years, so when I got the chance to work with her on an exclusive print I jumped at it! I invited her to be part of The Jealous Curator Collection at Sebastian Foster, and luckily, she said yes! This gorgeous piece is the result. I don’t know what I love most… the dreamy palette, those braids, that foresty shirt, those twinkly eyes?! This lovely print has been added to my collection, along with previous pieces I’ve shown by Casey Roberts and Rebecca Chaperon.

{ps. Only 50 of these prints have been made! They are 11″x14″ and $40… available here}
