i’m jealous of jonathan zawada

You’ve heard of making mountains out of molehills, right? Well, Sydney based artist Jonathan Zawada is making mountains out of “graph data (displayed as printed mirrors on accompanying plinths), modeled in 3D and then oil paintings created from those 3D renders.” Yep, a little more complicated than what the moles are doing! All of these stunning pieces can be seen in Jonathan’s new show, Over Time, that is currently displayed at Prism Gallery in Los Angeles. The show runs until February 28, 2011.

Umm, this may very well be the coolest post that has ever been on The Jealous Curator! I debated showing it actually, because quite frankly, it puts the posts that I write to shame! This one is true poetry… really. When I asked writer Anne Sage {of Rue Magazine, and The City Sage} to be a holiday guest, I knew she’d do something clever, but I did not expect this:
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

i am so jealous and very
e.e. cummings who writes
“one’s not half two. It’s two are halves of one”
and paints the sun

“my blood approves,”
and poems and paintings are a better fate
than jealousy
i swear by all feelings

if he is true that
“all which isn’t singing is mere talking”
then long loud and clear
these songs resound

“this is the garden:colours come and go,”
admiring azures and starstruck greens
jealous small but full happy seems
the bigger more golden glow.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
See? How am I supposed to compete with that! Thank you so much Anne – you creative genius, you! xo
ps. I had no idea that e.e.cummings painted too. Hm, an inspirational and educational post!

For the longest time, I thought that American artist Lisa Golightly was actually two people, better known as Kiki & Polly. Turns out, it’s just her. Easy mistake though, as her site, her Etsy shop, and her blog all go by that name. She has a very sweet explanation behind Kiki & Polly, that just so happens to go perfectly with her lovely work {soft paintings that explore bits and pieces of sunny childhood memories, often in the form of sweet, faceless children}. Anyway, I know that Lisa’s a very busy/popular lady these days, so I’m thrilled that she has taken a break from the studio to let us know who makes her jealous:

I am jealous of Alex Kanevsky

I love his use of color and confidence in how he uses the paint and creates movement in his pieces. Those big chunks of color and drips, how he creates objects with seemingly few strokes is so beautiful to me. It looks effortless, confident and unafraid. The color palette he works with makes even his unlikely subjects ‘pretty,” which to me, makes it even more interesting to explore.
I am a jealous, jealous gal.

Yep… I can relate! Thanks so much Lisa… now, back to the studio you go!
merry christmas… and thank you!

Merry Christmas ♥
Christmas always makes me feel lovey, mushy and thankful. This year I feel very lovey, mushy and thankful… and it’s all because of you! Thank you so much for making The Jealous Curator what it is. I never thought I would “meet” so many amazing people through a simple, little blog – but I absolutely have! Lovely emails, postcards from exhibitions all over the world, and amazing opportunities have shown up on my doorstep and I have you to thank! I also want to say a special thank you to a few artists who, completely unnecessarily, sent me some of their work during 2010 {shown above}. It was like getting Christmas presents all year-round… who wouldn’t feel lovey, mushy and thankful after that?!
Have a lovely holiday with your friends & family! Oh, and don’t forget to pop in next week to visit with my insanely amazing holiday guests! They’re fabulous, and they’re jealous… what a combo!

i’m jealous of scott listfield

Scott Listfield paints astronauts. Lots and lots of astronauts, all of whom are here from a few decades back to “explore the present”. They might be a bit disappointed though, because I’m pretty sure that by 2010 they were expecting flying cars, and silver everything as promised in movies like 2001 : A Space Odessy, and 1984. Well, don’t worry lonely little astronauts, I think I have a few nice, modern girls that would love to show you around… maybe you could even take them out for a donut.
{Scott’s work is currently showing in a two man show at the Laconia Gallery in Boston… Dec 3th – January 29th}
christmas wish list 2010
I’ve been jealous a lot in the last two years, so this wish list could easily go on forever, however, I’ve managed to control myself as much as humanly possible. Here are a few things that I would love to see under my Christmas tree this year… Santa, are you listening?

Ok, now this last one isn’t art {technically}, but it’s been on my wish list every year since I was a kid:

Mmmm, chips… no, no – not a huge, sculptural installation that looks like a pile of chips {although that would be pretty cool}… I just want plain old potato chips. Preferably with dip.
I hope that all of you get what you’re wishing for too… Happy Holidays everyone! xo

i’m jealous of shaun downey

Wish List : #296… have a soft, beautiful, and insanely well-executed portrait of myself painted by Toronto based artist Shaun Downey… in the forest, wearing a fancy yellow prom dress, with daisies in my hair. Oh, and I also want those lavender rain boots {Wish #297}.
i’m jealous of russell leng

I’ll admit it, this is not usually the style of work that I write about. To be perfectly honest, the first thing I did when I found these little gems {pun totally intended} by Canadian artist Russell Leng was send them off to Erin Loechner at Design For Mankind, because yes, these are absolutely her kind of thing… but wait, I can’t stop looking at them. A lot. Aaaannnd, now I’m jealous. Well there you have it… these gorgeous, layered, rocky acrylic paintings are my kind of thing!
i’m jealous of will cotton

How can you look at these sweet and dreamy paintings by American artist Will Cotton and not want to run out to get yourself a venti, with whip, peppermint mocha… to sip while hanging out naked with Katy Perry. Ok, maybe just get the coffee! It’s a bit too cold to be showing up at Starbucks without your clothes. And that goes for you too Katy! Yep, Will painted the cover for Katy Perry’s latest album, and art directed her video for California Gurls. Do you think I could get him to art direct my gingerbread house? I promise to keep my shirt on.
i’m jealous of lu cong

I’m in awe of these stunning/beautifully soft/sort of sad portraits by Denver based artist Lu Cong. If I owned one of these large scale paintings {they all range from about 3 to 5 feet square} I think the majority of my day would be lost staring into those stunning/beautifully soft/sort of sad eyes that have managed to completely pull me in. Sigh… so gorgeous.
