A “disciplined free spirit” … that is officially my new life goal! Also, I want to change my name to Bunnie. This was such a funny, inspiring, and yes, cosmic conversation with Los Angeles based artist Bunnie Reiss. I only discovered her work last month, but the moment I did, I knew I had to have her on the podcast! Oh. My. Well, that leads perfectly into this next batch of cosmic work. This is the book Bunnie made, titled The Cosmic Child, that we were talking about. It’s absolutely stunning. And cosmic:

Beautiful! It’s currently sold out (no surprise!), but she’s organizing another run very soon so keep your eye on her shop!

Next, I mentioned that Bunnie seems to really like painting on, well, everything. She agreed. Here’s proof:

See? We weren’t kidding! Boots, walls, books, and yes, her car.

These next images are so dreamy. This is what she was working on while she was in Paris last month … pastel and quiet and soft:

Lovely. It’s so cool that the work continues to look like hers, but the palettes and details often change depending on where she’s traveling. And yes, Bunnie travels a lot! {ps. these three images are from her inspiring Instagram feed}

And now, her murals. Of all the things Bunnie paints on, buildings are her favorite. Oh, and if you want her to paint on, or in, your building, CONTACT HER, because she’ll end up doing something like this:

Love! I included that scaffolding shot because she had talked about gridding out her murals by using the squares of the scaffolding… I’m going to have to trust her on that one, because my brain would not do that. My brain, however, can totally understand squirrels and rabbits eating donuts ♥

And last but not least, her gloves. This is how I first discovered the wonderful world of Bunnie Reiss, so I just had to share them again:

Here we are, 77 episodes into “Art For Your Ear”, but today is something a little different. Yep, this was recored at a live event in Portland! Artist/illustrator Lisa Congdon and I showed up at a gorgeous shop called Hand-Eye Supply. But we weren’t alone, oh no, we had an amazing live audience there too! Lisa and I decided to sort of interview each other (really it was just a good excuse for me and Lisa to talk… which by the way we could do for HOURS.) Alright, first up. Where were we? Right here:

Hand-Eye Supply is such a beautiful, creative space! This looks like me talking about when I started working on “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk”… I had dinner with Lisa in Oakland about a week after I signed the contract, and to be totally blunt, I was freaking out. I have a feeling this was me saying, “Um, how do I write a whole book, Lisa!? You just wrote “Art, Inc.”, so TELL ME WHAT TO DO!” And no surprise, she had fabulous advice.

Next up, flowers, patterns, and Lisa finally being ready to put her own work on her own body:

Yes, there it is {photo taken today!} Her brand new tattoo, on her drawing arm no less. She has lots of tattoos, but this is the first one that is her work. I love the story around this, so if you’re not listening yet… hit play!

We were talking about showing “in progress” work, and I always love an excuse to post images from an artist’s studio, so here you go:

Ah, gorgeous! So happy and filled with life… much like Lisa herself!

Oh, that wasn’t so hard. The titles of these three (because, for me, the titles are a huge part) are:

1. “saturday’s jazzercise class had, like totally, transformed candace both physically and, like, spiritually.”
2. “another saturday night, and without fail, margot left it ALL on the dance floor”
3. “they always said she had a real flare for fashion”

Sigh. That’s the sound I make every time I look at the work of American artist Kristen Martincic. Refreshing water, lovely pools, paper swimsuits… yeah, paper swimsuits that Kristen sews. SEWS! Sigh. Gah! “Traditional print media and a hybrid of print, drawing and painting on panel” … don’t you want to jump in there? Me too! Well, safety first… paper flotation devices for everyone:

Yep. Sewn and stuffed paper floaties and life vests. Seriously, just too good. Oh and of course, you’re going to need a swimsuit too. Brace yourself. These are gorgeous:

Japanese paper, with a perfect touch of printed ink, sewn into delicate suits. Ok, I have to do it again… sigh.

Kristen is a new mom so she hasn’t been in the studio much these days. When she can get in there though it looks a bit like this:

If she “can just punch some circles” she considers it a successful day in the studio! Hilarious and so true when there’s a baby hanging out with you.

In the not-so-speedy speed round I had to ask her about diving boards, mainly so I’d have an excuse to show a few more of her pools … complete with diving boards:

I’ve talked to artists who work with hand-made paint, fresh flowers, tiny glass tiles, and delicate paper… but today is a new one. Lint – aka dryer fluff. Yes, Canadian artist Tonya Corkey creates these gorgeous pieces using lint from the laundry room! I wrote about her years ago {the second I found her work obviously}, and now thanks to the wonders of podcasts, I was able to ask all of my lint-related questions. Before we really get going, just so you believe me, look at this close-up of that first piece above:

Lint!!! Mind. Blown. Ok, moving on. This next piece is the colorful portrait that Tonya was talking about:

Just imagine collecting and organizing that much colorful lint? It makes me want to wash a bunch of red socks so I can send her a ball of pinky/red fluff! Now, not that I want Tonya to ever feel terrified, but I kinda love that this piece scared her so much. See, brilliant artists are humans too.

Ok, so here are some of her portraits. The first guy below, Freddie, was the first lint portrait she ever did, and is titled “Your Friend Freddie”. This piece is 5’x3.5′ and took months for Tonya to finish… which doesn’t surprise me at all:

She quickly embraced negative space which saved a lot of time… and lint.

If you were an early adopter to the world of Etsy, you’ll know exactly who my guest is today. Yep, I’m talking to Portland based artist Ashley Goldberg! I loved her work before I even started this blog {which was almost 8 years ago}, and watched from across the interweb as she evolved into what she refers to as “Ashley 2.0″… I wanted to hear alllll of the stories that went along with that, and she told me! Well, you asked and I listened… and then I called Polish-born, US based artist/illustrator Marta Spendowska! I’ve written about Marta several times over the years, the last time being only a few weeks ago. I received so many comments asking me to have her on the podcast, and luckily she said YES! Right!? Sigh. Near the beginning of our conversation she mentioned doing portraits… I had no idea she did portraits, but look what I found in the illustration section on her site:

Whoa. Gorgeous! I did, however, know about the lovely perfume bottles that were also in that same illustration portfolio. They were actually the first bit of Marta’s work that I ever wrote about:

Ahhhh, I can almost smell their powdery, perfumy goodness.

Guess, what… more flowers! We were talking about them as part of her evolution from illustrator to fine artist {and it’s just a good excuse for me to show more of them}:

Yes, I love them. Now, I’ve said this many times before… I always admire artists who continue to push themselves to evolve. Marta is definitely one of those people! These are floral-ish, but heading into abstract… and they’re absolutely stunning:

These are the pieces I wrote about a few weeks ago… petals? Butterfly wings? Both? Love.

Well that was hilarious and fun! I had Philadelphia based artist Martha Rich as my guest on the VERY FIRST Art For Your Ear, 71 episodes ago… annnnnd, she’s back! The book we worked on together was just released this past Tuesday, so what better way to celebrate than having Martha come on the podcast to talk about inner critics, pantyhose, and the possibility that armadillos are actually dinosaurs that still roam our planet. First, a few of my faves… and no little kitty, we will NEVER stop talking!

Hell yes, indeed!

Martha was saying how crazy busy she is these days (YAY!), but that her crazy projects have been taking a backseat. You know, things like painting on rocks and leaving them around Philadelphia to be found by passers-by, and also working on a painting a day for a year type of projects:

How badly do I want the finger rock!? Sooooo badly.

And now, onto the book… “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk”. We worked on this for almost two years, and had so much fun together… mind you, we both also had a few very meta moments when our inner critics told us there was no way we could pull this off. Luckily we ignored those jerks and got it done! Here’s a few pieces from the book {including the “speech bubble coming out of a butt”}, and some of Martha’s sketches:

LOVE! Those final two paintings are the pieces that got into this year’s American Illustration Magazine! Very big deal in the illustration world and so exciting for Martha {and me… living vicariously}. I wish I could be there this November to see them hanging on the wall at the big par-tay, but at least I got to be there last year. Here’s a few Instagram shots of me and Martha being very New York fancy/pink:

Isn’t that stunning? Quite a venue for a party {ps. I think Sarah Jessica Parker got married there.}

Weird and wonderful! And, that little guy is a perfect segue into one of the not-so-speedy speed round questions… favorite animal to draw? We all knew it was either going to be a lobster or an armadillo:

… what I didn’t expect was our crazy tangent about armadillos being dinosaurs. Oh my word, hilarious! Please don’t judge us!!! Oh no, prom photos are up next, so not judging us is totally out of the question now:

Hm, where’s Martha’s photo? Conveniently, she “couldn’t find it”, so now I’m forced to make a guess as to what she and “Mark” looked like at their Senior Prom. I bet this painting is pretty darn close!

And the final question in the not-so-speedy speed round… would she rather “wear pantyhose everyday for the rest of her life, or shave her head”. She voted for “shave her head”:

Bahaha! Pantyhose. She really does hate them so much. Prince, snake soup, drawing for nuns, and a handful of bleeps… yep, he does amazing things with oil pastels, and tells some pretty hilarious stories! I met Terrence Payne in 2012 when I was in Minneapolis for Girl Crush. Jennifer Davis was my co-host for that workshop, and it was held at SooVAC, a gorgeous gallery run by an amazing woman named Carolyn Payne… who happens to be Terrance’s wife! A small little world filled with talented, artsy people. Anywho, I got the chance to see Terrence “coloring” on some reallllly big pieces of paper while I was there, and I was an instant fan! Ok, let’s go look… you can listen right up there, or you can subscribe on iTunes.

Ancient art meets the mean streets of Chicago… well, the potholes anyway. Artist/designer Jim Bachor and I are talking about his gorgeous mosaic work, his 85 year old lookout, the fact that people are truly awesome, and me possibly dressing up as Jim for Halloween. First up, “THIS IS NOT A POTHOLE anymore”…

No, it isn’t! It’s an amazing piece of art that I would love to happen upon while out for a walk! Yep, Jim’s ice creams are my faves, of course, and we’ll get back to them in just a moment. But first, here are the portraits of his twin boys (Henry and Ajax), along with two other portraits. If one piece of glass doesn’t transfer, these very detailed faces can end up looking really weird. Luckily all of these beauties worked out just fine…

Wow. Also, I love that he’s using this ancient technique to make Starbucks cups and cigarettes.

So. This is it. Jim’s very first pothole, naturally titled “POTHOLE”…

Ah, yes, art born from necessity. If the city won’t fill the pothole in front of your house, just fill it with art!

He said that he was a little bit scared of getting in trouble for the pothole. He had just won a commission to create a mosaic at Thorndale Red Line station on Chicago’s North Side and didn’t want to risk losing it. Thankfully, he didn’t get in any trouble for his pothole-fixing, and the mural project went off without a hitch. Oh, and it’s gorgeous…

Beautiful.

Speaking of beautiful – good friends are beautiful. Enter Pat, Jim’s friend who emailed everyone… including me! Here’s a little bit of that very supportive email…

… Jim studied the mosaic arts for months in Italy. Now he’s not only selling his own pieces, but he decided to share some of  his “mysterious” work with the public. Me? I’m Pat. Never mind about me. I’m Jim’s friend and Jim is a bit flummoxed by this whole publicity thing. So, grub worm that I am, I took it upon myself to promote my pal.

“Me? I’m Pat. Never mind about me.” Ha! I think I may to put that on a T-shirt!

Ok, up next we really got into the whole pothole thing. What do people hate? Potholes. What do people love? Flowers…

… and ice cream …

YES! Oh, I love Jim’s “Treats in the Streets”. That pink and yellow piece just above was the piece he did in Finland. Site-specific ice cream potholes? Fan-freakin-tastic! 

Now, Finland is certainly not the only place he’s filled a pothole or two. The day before we did this interview Jim had been in San Antonio. He’d reached out to his followers there, was pointed to this specific pothole, and while he was there he filled it with a bit of “trash”. As part of his “Pretty Trashy” series he paid homage to San Antonio’s own “Whataburger”. Here he is in action – orange vest, cones, knee pads and all – followed by a few more trashy potholes from the same series…

Love. So, when Jim isn’t filling potholes with very, very expensive glass tiles, he is creating fine art mosaics that can hang on the wall. Once again, ancient technique and pop culture come crashing together. Here are two pieces from his cereal series…

Mmmm… insanely detailed glass and marble Cocoa Puffs!

This is the piece he was talking about, from his latest series titled “Fake”, with the tiny plane in the top corner. Again, his combination of old and new is just so perfect…

That red circle is printed onto the glass that sits over top of the mosaic, bringing your attention to the plane. Graphic. Clever. Beautiful.

Pinups and Canadiana, indeed! Today I’m talking to Vancouver based artist/illustrator Ryan Heshka, a proud fellow Canadian, about his sassy, pulp-inspired work. There are mean girls, “Mystery Twins”, and so much perfect found paper I can hardly stand it … we also covered important topics like underage drinking in barns on the Canadian Prairies.
