i’m jealous of rogério degaki

PAINTINGS.
Yes. They’re paintings! Large-scale oil paintings that look a whole lot like some of my favorite childhood sweaters {that I would totally wear today if they still fit me}. Seriously, I could not be happier right now… I love all of these pieces oh so very much! São Paulo based artist Rogério Degaki sent me his work yesterday, and about 26 minutes later this post was ready to go. So good… they’re PAINTINGS.

Yep. More portraits on vibrant backdrops. Here’s the thing – I could not contain myself when I found the work of American artist Jennifer Burton {even though I wrote about similar work in yesterday’s post}. It was that bear that got me… Or those giant dandelions… Or that bird on that lady’s head… Or the detail in the vinage-ish looking people on those flat, graphic backgrounds… Or maybe it was just all of it rolled up and put together… yep, that must have been it. LOVE!!!
{via Plywerk… Jennifer is their artist of the month for May}
i’m jealous of amy sherald

Oh, the stunning portraits of Baltimore based artist Amy Sherald… beautiful, strange, and insanely vibrant. To understand where this work comes from, I’ve got a chunk of Amy’s artist statement for you to read:
“The scope of my experiences involving race materialized from my upbringing in the south. While attending private schools and being one of two or three black children, I was raised to be conscious of how I acted, spoke and dressed. This performing aspect of my identity was cultivated from the beginning of my schooling. I learned this was the key to my social acceptance and assimilation. Drawing from these experiences, I am engaging from a personal perspective with the desire to extrapolate meaning on how identity is both constructed and performed within political, social, economic and cultural spheres.”
{Thanks to my friend Jen for reminding me about Amy’s work – so good.}
i’m jealous of kai samuels davis

So, on Friday morning I wrote about American painter Clare Elsaesser. Well, I cannot even imagine how amazingly creative their home must be, as this is the work of her husband, Kai Samuels Davis. Sigh… so much talent under one roof.
I am a sucker for portraits of women, add to that Kai’s color choices and his simple/confident brush strokes, and I’m completely done for. Love.

Flower covered portraits… YES! This is the lovely work of American artist Clare Elsaesser. You might recognize her work, because her Etsy shop, tastes orangey, is very popular! Well no wonder, with flowered covered portraits like this, you just can’t go wrong. However… I also crazy love this portrait, and there’s not a flower in sight:

i’m jealous of brandi marie little

Now this is my kind of “pet portraiture”! A little mermaid tattoo here, a delicate rainbow there… and voila, your pet is immortalized! American artist Brandi Marie Little‘s hyper-real, hyper-weird paintings have me almost convinced that a rat would be a good pet… but it would have to have a unicorn horn, just sayin. Now, if my local pet shop couldn’t bring that in, I’d also be happy with one of these little woodland creatures:

A tattooed bunny ear? YES! {well, wait, not in real life… ouch! poor bunny} but in a stunning painting from Brandi… YES!
i’m jealous of sandra eterovic

Sweet jiminy… I love, love, love these paintings. I mean sculptures. Or paintings. Ok, here’s where the confusion comes in… Melbourne based artist Sandra Eterovic paints with acrylic on wood, but then cuts away the background so that’s she’s just left with a giant Tshirt or a huge can of SPAM {so good! the painting that is, not actual SPAM} She lured me in with that number-covered couple, and then finished me off with these:

… grouchy men in Chanel shirts? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!!!
{Thanks to Lucy for sending me a link to Sandra’s work!}
i’m jealous of dominique fortin

The first three words that pop into my mind – strange, childhood, dreamy/nightmarey. Ok, that was technically four words, but I couldn’t just leave it at dreamy… these scare me just a tiny bit. And I like it. This is the beautifully bizarre work of Montreal based artist Dominique Fortin. Ok, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… a finished face, and an unfinished everything else is pure magic to me… and don’t even get me started on those fire breathing dogs on paint brush stilts. M.A.G.I.C.
{ps. I featured more of Dominique’s work in my ART GOES HERE post, that just went up today, over at sfgirlbybay}
i’m jealous of yuki kitazumi

A leisurely breakfast, a trip to the circus, and then a little research on how to make my garden grow! Ah yes, that’s what my weekend would be like if I lived in the illustrations of Tokyo based artist Yuki Kitazumi. I spotted her Encyclopedia of Roses on Pinterest a few nights ago, and boy oh boy, I love where it lead me! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m suddenly in the mood for a little bread n’ honey. Happy weekend to you!
i’m jealous of lisa daria

Ahhhh, fresh-cut flowers in simple glass jars. If you love having flowers from the garden in your house every day, then you’re in luck – these are all from a very lovely “painting-a-day series” by Lisa Daria {most of them are 6″x6″ and only $100!} Oh boy, I think I might need a house full of these lovely bouquets… it is officially Spring, right?!
