Sometimes, it’s what’s not there that truly matters most! I was in a collage-ish {not a word, but just roll with it} mood today, and voila, the portfolio of UK based artist Joe Webb. An x-acto blade, gorgeous color choices, and a whole bunch of perfect {and romantic!} negative space… SWOON!

Sweet, and weird… yep, easily one of my favorite combinations! These are one of a kind, paper mache “creature” masks by London based artist Abigail Brown. Each one is so special, and funny, and cute, and yes, kinda weird. I love each of them, but hung together in a cluster? Oh boy… it’s like a beautifully bizarre zoo hanging on the wall! LOVE. ps. that happy little sloth is killing me with his cuteness. [Available in her shop]

Oh. I love these so much! They are from a little book, titled “Accessories”, by Paris based interior designer, turned illustrator, turned full time fine artist Philippe Weisbecker. These gorgeous pages are a little bit scrapbook, and a little bit sketchbook – found vintage illustrations snipped, cut, glued, and then paired beautifully with Philippe’s own drawings. Oh boy, I’m gonna need a trip to the thrift shop, a pair of scissors and a very sharp pencil… and maybe a big ball of pink yarn, just for good measure.

I wrote about Canadian, now Bay area based, artist Crystal Liu just over four years ago. We just recently reconnected through email, and boy am I happy that we did because I got a peek at these beauties {not even titled yet, nor on her site… lucky us!}. Beautifully drawn flowers, sitting on inky backgrounds, with what I like to imagine are magical gold seedpods falling from the sky. Sigh. I could look at them for hours.

I suddenly feel the urge to cut up a bunch of old books… PERFECTLY. Sigh. Original bits of maps, landscapes, comic books, and vintage ladies cut into triangles, circles, diamonds, and hexagons. So simple, but oh, so striking… this is the lovely collage work of UK Artist Amelia Coward.

Gorgeous. This is the work of Spanish artist Pablo S. Herrero. He’s quite well known for his large-scale murals on and in buildings, but I just love love love these ink on paper pieces. Mysterious and beautiful, simple and striking. In fact, I’m now inspired to spend a few days in the forest… ok, I was going anyway, but now I’m even more excited! I don’t usually take days off from posting, but it’s my little boy’s birthday and he only asked us for one thing… to wake up in the forest on his actual birthday. Done. I will be computerless for the next few days, and will be back with a new post on Thursday. See you then!

Oh. It’s all just so awesome. I mentioned American artist Martha Rich in yesterday’s post, which of course made me want to rush over to her site immediately… so I did. As always, I found a whole bunch of stuff that I LOVE {that first piece is especially perfect given the topic of the Oprah post from yesterday!}. And the pink boobs, well, I think they speak for themselves #storyofthenudes

Power lines, freeways, pavers, rebar, steel bridges, and dizzying high rises… and plum blossoms. Yep, somehow these delicate flowers work seamlessly with these hard urban textures thanks to the exquisite hand-cut paper work of Hong Kong born, Pittsburgh based artist Bovey Lee. Ah, if only every city could create such a harmonious balance between nature and industry. Sigh. Lovely.

How have I not seen these before? I’ve written about Swedish artist/illustrator Camilla Engman several times, and she is one of the artists in CREATIVE BLOCK {you have to try her unblocking project on p.219 – it’s a really good one!}. I love these found envelope collages so, so much… clever, fun, creative, and instantly recognizable as “Camilla Engman”. I love that I recognize some of these funny little characters from her paintings, and now here they are, in found paper form, popping out of envelope houses! They make me want to rifle through all of my recycled paper, grab some scissors, and head into the studio for the rest of the day #donotdisturb

I’m gonna need a pair of scissors, and the name of the used bookstore where Berlin based artist Clare Celeste Börsch shops! Vintage books, cut up and pasted back together into bizarre, yet perfect, compositions… birds, flowers, gemstones, and of course, water skiers!  I love all of them so much, but I happen to own that little birdie perched on his flowery gemstone island, so I’m gonna have to call that one my favorite. Or the water skiers. Or those gazelles. Or that sake drinking bride. Hm.
